Why might Wednesday leave Netflix? Season 2 explained

January 3, 2023

Looking back on 2022, there’s no denying that it’s been a colossal year for TV fans, with the return of juggernauts like Stranger Things being invited back to Middle-earth with The Rings Of Power. However, if we had to pick one show that really took the world by storm, it would be Wednesday.

Co-created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the coming-of-age horror-comedy hit screens on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 and starred Jenna Ortega as the titular teenager of the family. Addams.

We’ve seen the family through many incarnations since the characters first appeared in The New Yorker in 1938.

Following the teenager through her freshman year at Nevermore Academy was a total blast and hopes were high for Season 2. However, she may not arrive on the same platform. With that in mind, why might Wednesday leave Netflix?

Why might Wednesday leave Netflix?

Season 2 could premiere on Prime Video instead of Netflix on Wednesday as Deadline reports that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has signed a merger deal with Amazon for $8.5 billion in 2022.

This is because the Wednesday series is actually a product of MGM – the iconic film and television production and distribution company – so it’s possible that the rights to Wednesday will be acquired by Amazon as a result of the merger.

On the other hand, it’s possible that Netflix and Amazon will come to an agreement regarding keeping Wednesday on its original platform. Alas, that remains to be seen.

In December 2022, CNet reported that Wednesday was Netflix’s third most-watched show in its catalog, serving as runners-up to Squid Game and Stranger Things 4; it has amassed over a billion hours of streaming.

Given that, it’s likely that Netflix will be determined to keep its platform home from Wednesday going forward. Deadline reported that Amazon said it won’t be making all MGM content exclusive to Prime Video, so that could include Wednesday.

Is Wednesday renewed for season 2?

No, Wednesday is not yet officially renewed for Season 2.

As we just touched on the show’s streaming success, this may come as a surprise. However, with speculation about a possible relocation to Prime Video, that’s perhaps less of a surprise.

Anyway, we expect Wednesday to be renewed in the near future.

“It’s something we’re excited to explore”

Co-creator Alfred recently spoke about Season 2 during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“We kind of want to explore and kind of complicate all of these relationships going forward. The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most opportunity for season two, and I think that’s something we’re excited to explore. For us, the show is also really about that female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid being really central to that.

He continued: “The fact that they really connected with the public, it was very rewarding… Then the other thing that is really interesting is to continue to explore also the mother-daughter relationship of Mercredi-Morticia… How will their relationship evolve?

Wednesday is now streaming on Netflix.
