Its cast includes Bale, Harry Melling (who people might recognize as Dudley Dursley from the Harry Potter movies), Lucy Boyton, Toby Jonesand a surprising cameo from Robert Duval. Our review called it “a breathtaking gothic image that is uneven due to how the whole experience can be horribly overplayed.”

The film was rated R by the MPA – let’s explore why.

What is the movie The Pale Blue Eye about?

pale blue eye follows Detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) in 1830 as he is contacted by the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, to investigate the recent and disturbing murder of one of their cadets. The night before, one of them was hanged, and later his heart was ripped out of his chest.

During his investigation, Landor is assisted by another young Academy cadet, one named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling). The film, like the novel that preceded it, is not based on actual events, although Poe was a member of the West Point Academy for a small part of his life. It is a fiction of Poe’s life, at the Shakespeare in love.

More murders will soon be committed, and Landor and Poe will have to work closely together to find out what’s going on. pale blue eye has very little in common in tone and direction with Rian Johnson Glass Onionanother recent entry in the thriller genre, and reviews have been quite mixed all around. This time around, however, we’re spending time with our lead detective and exploring his character in some depth.

Where can I watch The Pale Blue Eye?

by Scott Cooper pale blue eye began a two-week limited theatrical run in select countries around the world on December 23, 2022 and will be available to stream on Netflix on January 6, 2023. It will then join other recent murder mystery on the platform like Glass Onion, although the modern setting of this film will then be thrown back 200 years, and the blue of the Greek islands will be replaced by the snowy West Point, New York. Benoit Blanc’s spirit will also transform into a more serene and introspective detective in Augustus Landor.

It’s also not the first R-rated movie to drop on Netflix recently. by Noah Baumbach White noise also received the same rating by the MPAa decision that raised quite a few eyebrows. pale blue eye is significantly more graphic than Baumbach’s absurdist comedy, and it’s easy to see why it’s not suitable for kids, even if a few minor touches would have downgraded it to a PG-13 movie.
