Who is the immortal mother?

The Immortal Mother, also known as Voleth Meir, is a demon from The Witcher universe who feeds on the pain of humans, elves, and mages.

Usually, they take the form of an elderly human female, but according to tradition, they can change shape depending on who they are interacting with.

Other powers include telepathy, generic spellcasting, shapeshifting, and demonic possession; while being able to move at high speed like a cloud of embers.

The Immortal Mother first appeared on the Continent at the Conjunction of the Spheres. The first Witchers were sent to eliminate Voleth Meir, who buried the demon in his hut, located under the ruins of an elven fortress in the North.

Despite her imprisonment, she is able to reach the subconscious of some powerful individuals through their dreams. In this way, she prompts Yennefer, Fringilla and Francesca to make three different contracts with her; pretending that she is an elven god called Kaer Morhen.

She then manipulates the three characters in order to bring Ciri to the monolith that she collapsed during the fall of Cintra, which turns out to be a way to bring Voleth Meir’s native dimension to the mainland.

  • THE WITCHER : Does Eskel die in the original book series?

Interestingly, The Deathless Mother did not appear in the original novel or the Witcher game series, but it appears to be a villain created by merging two entities from video games, known as The Crones and Gaunter O’Dimm.

While neither of these two enemies share the exact same abilities or backgrounds as The Deathless Mother, Voleth Meir does share many of their character traits.

The Crones appeared in The Witcher 3 in a hut very similar to Voleth Meir’s, and want to use Ciri’s elder blood to increase their powers. They were also able to transform their appearance to accommodate any interaction they had with strangers, much like The Deathless Mother does.

Meanwhile, Guanter O’Dimm, also known as the Master Mirror or Man of Glass, was not a demon, but an enemy who also sought power by making “contracts” with characters. In the same way that Voleth Meir makes a pact with the Three Magical Women of Season 2, he uses games and tricks to “steal the soul” of whoever he meets.
