Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer behind the Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, is a horrifying subject – who is he and what happened to him? Ryan Murphy’s biographical series will provide deeper fictional context, but the man, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, is one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.
Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer brutally murdered 17 men in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His victims were mostly gay and of color – the classic story of a serial killer satisfying their sexual urges. He ate the remains of his victim, performed sexual acts and preserved the corpses; a serial killer with the hybrid of necrophilia and cannibalism.
What happened to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer?
In 1991, time is running out for the serial killer. One of his victims escaped, and their experiences led the police to finally arrest the serial killer. What law enforcement found in his apartment was nothing short of horrific and shocking. Preserved body parts and collections of all his victims. It was a horrible start for the police investigation; really sickening.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Dahmer denied ever suing people of color and claimed he had a specific body type he usually went for. A frowned upon claim – data evidence suggested the serial killer had a specific sexual target that included the color of his skin.
The most contentious part of his trial was whether Jeffrey Dahmer was mentally ill. It was prosecution versus defense, wondering if he was mentally stable to prevent himself from participating in serious crimes. Experts came to the fray, saying Dahmer suffered from schizotypal disorder, borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
In the end, the jury found that Jeffrey Dahmer was sane to understand that what he was doing was wrong and immoral, particularly because of his personality perceived by others – charming and friendly. The serial killer knew he was hiding a secret life, which didn’t work in his favor when he was mentally tested in the courtroom.
What sentence was passed on Jeffrey Dahmer?
The hotly debated topic of the death penalty surfaced during the serial killer’s trial. Wisconsin had abolished the death penalty, so it was a sentencing trial only – Jeffrey Dahmer was given 15 life sentences.
Prison life was hell for Jeffrey Dahmer; criminals aware of his crimes in the outside world have repeatedly attempted to kill him. The serial killer tried to convert to Christianity, but it wasn’t enough to atone for his sins. Even those close to him admitted that the serial killer accepted the fact that he deserved to die.
Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered in prison on November 28, 1994, ironically by the hands of another murderer, Christopher Scarver. And to add to the irony, Scarver claimed that God told him to.
Isolation, religion and prison duties were not enough to keep Dahmer away from his demons.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story isn’t the only release covering the serial killer on Netflix. If you’ve been intrigued by the fictional biographical series that focuses more on victims, then on October 7, 2022, a popular docuseries returns – Conversations with a Killer: The Tapes of Jeffrey Dahmer.
