Which issues of The Sandman graphic novels on Netflix are adapting?

August 6, 2022

Netflix invites you to experience the dark fantasy of one of the most anticipated series in recent memory. Of course, we’re talking about The Sandman.

The new series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman and dedicated fans of his work will be delighted to learn that he himself co-developed the show with David S Goyer and Allan Heinberg.

Published by DC Comics, the original graphic novel series ran from January 1889 to March 1996, spanning 75 issues in total and consisting of ten paperbacks. Now Netflix audiences can witness the story of Dream (played by Tom Sturridge) on screen, a cosmic being who controls dreams and must pick up the pieces after being held captive for years.

With Season 1 offering 10 episodes to binge, it’s worth considering just how much story these installments offer. So which issues of The Sandman graphic novels on Netflix adapt?

Which graphic novels The Sandman on Netflix adapt?

Season 1 covers the first two books of The Sandman.

Titled Preludes and Nocturnes and The Dollhouse, these two graphic novels contain issues 1-16, with Preludes containing the first 8 and The Dollhouse consisting of issues 9-16.

Interestingly, those already familiar with graphic novels may have noticed that the first four episodes of the Netflix series are named after the first four issues; Sleep of the Just, Imperfect Hosts, Dream a Little Dream of Me and A Hope in Hell.

“Don’t Stop Until Episode Six”

With The Sandman graphic novels split into 10 books, it’s perhaps not too surprising that Neil Gaiman has offered his thoughts on how best to approach season 1 of the series.

“I think 10 episodes is probably too long for people to sit down and have an all day listening party,” he told IGN in a recent interview:

“…I honestly think the emotional impact of 10 episodes at once is probably going to destroy you…I would say for anyone who was doing the giant viewing party, or planning on taking a day off or whatever, I would say go to episode six.

He continued, “Don’t stop until episode six, but go to episode six, then take the day off to digest before you go back and do The Dollhouse.”

The Sandman is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
