In Your place or mine, two friends live on opposite coasts. Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) went on a date and then decided they would be friends. However, those feelings of a possible relationship between them never left. Peter lives in New York, while Debbie lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel). Debbie was struggling with being a single mother and trying to find time for herself, so Peter was going to fly to Los Angeles to help her. In doing so, he offers her to stay at his home in New York to experience something different.
It’s funny for someone who lives in Los Angeles not to take risks and make safe bets like Debbie does; there is a whole field of opportunities. Not only is Los Angeles a place of opportunity, but New York is too. So for her, going to Peter’s area takes her out of her comfort zone. Debbie and Peter also surround themselves with people who have their best interests at heart, and when they change locations, these friends give each other better advice than they could have imagined. Sometimes you just need a new perspective and a new eye to really read the situation you’re in, just to help you decide what’s best for you.
The filming locations for this movie are split into two as they were filmed in New York and Los Angeles.

New York, New York
Peter lives in New York as a consultant and is incredibly wealthy. At first he wanted to be a writer and that’s why the friendship between him and Debbie worked out so well. However, he made the bold choice to go in a different direction because he knew it would be impossible for him to have any security being a writer. So he then lives this lavish lifestyle that is different from what he had planned with Debbie.
New York is the place to be to make your dreams come true and Peter feels like he hasn’t reached that goal yet because he’s not with Debbie. Having the backdrop of New York to help Debbie in her search for love, while realizing how Peter feels about her is a perfect balance.
Los Angeles, California
Debbie lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack who has been on the hockey team for some time. She helped him realize his dream and raise him on her own. Instead of becoming a writer herself, she took the safe route (the opposite of what Peter did) and became an accountant. She needed a steady job to raise a family, and the nervousness that was once there with Peter faded. Debbie wanted to do her best to get out of this funk she was in and that’s why Peter helped her.
When Peter changes and travels to Los Angeles to spend time with Jack, he realizes how different his life could be. By helping Jack and being in Debbie’s world, there’s a sense of security he’s never felt before, and he feels like he’s doing something meaningful in his life by helping Jack.
At some point, Jack realized that the meaningless relationships he was in didn’t fill the void he felt. He wanted to live for someone else and he learned not to be selfish because he had to take responsibility for another human being.
The contrast between Los Angeles and New York is definitely felt in this movie, especially with the way the city feels. And of course, how people act within it.
