January 6, 2023

A new murder mystery starring the multi-talented Christian Bale hit Netflix recently, giving audiences a fresh dose of thrilling cinema. Naturally, viewers are curious to know more. So where was The Pale Blue Eye filmed?

The thriller is based on the 2003 novel of the same name, written by Louis Bayard, and follows the same plot.

Hired to investigate the gruesome murder of a military cadet, veteran detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) enlists the help of fellow cadet, Edgar Allan Poe, based on the real-life writer and poet, to help him uncover the truth.

Amazingly, the film only received a limited theatrical release in the United States in December 2022 before making its way to Netflix earlier this year.

Pale Blue Eye filming locations

Filming for The Pale Blue Eye began in November 2021 in Pennsylvania. Set in the 1800s, the film required a detailed historical feel, provided by multiple locations in Pennsylvania.

The Compass Inn in Westmoreland County provided the perfect old-fashioned backdrop for many scenes in the film. The Inn has a rich and detailed history, with part of the building dating back to 1799. Now a museum, The Compass Inn is open to the public for tours and offers a taste of life in the early 1800s.

Another Pennsylvania location to feature in The Pale Blue Eye is the campus of Westminster College in New Wilmington. The college provides a picturesque backdrop to the military academy at the center of the film. The college newspaper reports that more than 100 students took part in a casting call for extras to play cadets in the thriller.
