The filming locations behind a movie or TV show are often key, as eagle-eyed fans will often be much more impressed with the production values of filming in real locations rather than on a green screen in a studio.
For a travel-centric film, this is especially important for Netflix’s latest release, Love and Gelato.

Love and Gelato flew to Netflix on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Jenna Evans Welch, the film tells the story of Lina, a 17-year-old American girl who is forced to travel to Rome to honor her mother’s dying wish.
Lina is catapulted into an unfamiliar land that is far too messy and chaotic for her methodical, nerdy nature, but having to face her fears and the secrets of her mother’s past, Lina’s outlook slowly begins to change.
Immersed in stunning landscapes, unfamiliar but delicious dishes, and unexpected romantic events, Lina will learn to look at the world and see herself in a whole new light.
Where was Love and Gelato filmed?
Lovers of authenticity will be delighted to learn that Love and Gelato was filmed in multiple locations across Italy.
The primary filming location used for the film was the Tuscany (Toscana) region of northern Italy and more specifically the city of Florence, known in Italian as Firenze.
Filming for the project took place over the summer of 2021, with the film’s cast releasing footage from their trip to Italy in June and July.
Florence appears to have been the primary filming location during production, with the Toscana Film Commission sharing several behind-the-scenes footage as filming begins.
Locations that have been used in Florence include Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Santa Croce, Sant’Ambrogio Market, Boboli Gardens, Piazza San Pier Maggiore, Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Borgo Santi Apostoli, Cemetery from Porte Sante and Piazzale Michelangelo.
As well as historic Florence, the Love and Gelato cast also visited Rome, where much of the film’s story takes place, with lead actress Susanna Skagg sharing footage of several notable sites including the Colosseum. and the Trevi Fountain.
Other projects shot in Tuscany
Tuscany has been an extremely popular filming location over the years with its historic towns and scenic countryside providing plenty of stunning views for filming.
According to IMDb, more than 1,300 movies and TV shows have been filmed in the region with notable projects including Killing Eve, Maison GucciDisney’s next live-action Pinocchio, Gladiator, Quantum of Solace, Twilight: New Moon and the drama series Medici.
Part of the reason for Tuscany’s popularity with filmmakers throughout the year is that the region offers production funding incentives, organized by the Toscana Film Commission, which also helps with logistics and scouting.
Love and Gelato is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
