The Case at the Heart of My Daughter’s Killer

Kalinka Bamberski was found dead in the early morning hours of July 10, 1982.

At just 14, Kalinka’s death came as a devastating shock to her father, André Bamberski, as his daughter lived a happy and healthy life.

According to The Guardian, after the autopsy report revealed that Kalinka had multiple injection marks on her arms, right leg and chest, Andre became suspicious, believing that his stepfather, Dr Dieter Krombach, had played a role in his death.

The report also noted that there was fresh blood around the teenager’s vagina, which had been torn, and a white substance was found inside her, which was never tested. .

During the autopsy, Kalinka’s sex organs were removed and were never seen again, even though they could have been potentially crucial pieces of evidence.

Despite the suspicious circumstances surrounding Kalinka’s death, the case was dropped by German authorities, leading Andre to take matters into his own hands, resulting in a quest for justice that would occupy almost the next 30 years of his life. life, which is detailed in the Netflix Documentary.

What happened to Dieter Krombach and where is he now?

Dieter Krombach died aged 85 on September 12, 2020 according to German publication RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland.

Even though André Bamberski had gathered more and more evidence to prove that his daughter’s death was suspicious, the German authorities continued to refuse to reopen the case.

Eventually, in 1995, a trial was held in a French court where Krombach was convicted in absentia of Kalinka’s murder and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, although he did not attend the trial and the German authorities refused to extradite him to face the charges according to the Guardian.

Two years later, new layers were added to the case when Krombach was arrested for drugging and raping a 16-year-old female patient and when confronted with forensic evidence, Krombach admitted to the crime and pleaded guilty. Since then, 16 women have brought charges against him.

However, Dieter Krombach only received a suspended sentence for the crime, despite having his medical license stripped by Digital Spy.

In 2006, it was discovered that Krombach was working as a doctor despite not having a license and was sentenced to two years in prison before being released in June 2008.

A year later, in September 2009, 74-year-old Krombach was mysteriously found beaten, bound and gagged in the French town of Mulhouse, Alsace, on the border with Germany.

As he was still a wanted fugitive after his conviction in absentia in 1995, Krombach was arrested in connection with Kalinka’s death and was ultimately due to face a new trial in March 2011.

According to Digital Spy, Dieter Krombach was sentenced to 15 years in prison for “bodily harm resulting in unintentional death” because it could not be proven that he intended to kill Kalinka.

After nine years and several attempts to appeal his conviction, Dieter Krombach was released from prison on February 22, 2020 on medical grounds, before dying seven months later in a nursing home on September 12, 2020.

What happened to André Bamberski?

After his daughter’s death in 1982, André Bamberski devoted the next three decades of his life to finding her killer.

After Kalinka’s autopsy report showed she had multiple injection marks on her arms, right leg and chest, he suspected her stepfather Dieter Krombach had killed her.

André set about gathering all the evidence he could and pressured the French and German authorities to continue the investigation.

He even traveled to Krombach’s hometown of Lindau, Germany, to distribute flyers containing his allegations against the doctor, which Krombach would use to sue André in a defamation case for which he was awarded 500,000 German marks – although André Bamberski never paid according to The Guardian.

After almost three decades and with the time elapsing before Krombach’s absentee conviction was dropped, André Bamberski was forced to resort to desperate measures as he staged Krombach’s kidnapping so that he could be arrested by the French authorities.

According to Digital Spy, Andre approached a man named Anton Krasniqi who, along with two associates, abducted Dieter Krombach from Germany and left him on the streets of Mulhouse in France to be arrested.

Andre Bamberski confessed to organizing the kidnapping during a trial in May 2014, for which he was given a one-year suspended prison sentence by The New York Times.
