The Dwarves have found something in the mines of Khazad-dûm

In the second episode of The Rings of Power, Elrond heads to the mountainous kingdom of Khazad-dûm in hopes of enlisting the aid of the Dwarves in building a great forge for Celebrimbor.

After a tense reunion with his friend, Prince Durin, after 20 years away, Elrond seems to win over the dwarf who then presents the elf’s proposal to his father, King Durin III.

However, the king is suspicious of the timing of Elrond’s visit and thinks it cannot be a coincidence that the elf has come now.

As the scene continues, it becomes clear that the Dwarves have found something while mining and are very secretive about their new discovery with Durin and his father taking a moment to examine the contents of a mysterious chest that gives off a silver glow.

What’s in the Dwarves’ box in The Rings of Power?

Although the contents of the chest are not shown on screen in Episode 2, the mysterious find is almost certainly mithril.

In one of the trailers for The Rings of Power, we see Durin holding a nugget of what appears to be silver mithril ore, which is likely what was in the king’s chest.

Mithril is a famous and coveted metal throughout Middle-earth, known for being extremely light and yet as hard as dragon scales while its value far exceeded that of gold.

As such, it’s no wonder King Durin wanted to keep the discovery of such a valuable material a secret in order to hoard mithril for the dwarves.

A History of Mithril in Middle-earth

The extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring gives some details on mithril as Gandalf explains how the wealth of Moria (another name for Khazad-dûm) did not come from gold or jewels but rather from the metal precious.

Not much has been written by JRR Tolkien about how mithril was first discovered in Khazad-dûm, but we do know that at the time of The Lord of the Rings in the Third Age the mines of Moria were almost completely dry, so it would make sense if the Dwarves had discovered it and started mining it in the Second Age of the Rings of Power.

Khazad-dûm became the only known source of mithril in Middle-earth, making it an extremely rare and valuable material, prompting the Dwarves to mine as much of the metal as possible.

However, after thousands of years of mining that had made Khazad-dûm the wealthiest of all the dwarven kingdoms, in TA (Third Age) 1980 the dwarves inadvertently awakened a Balrog, the fiery creature to which Gandalf faces in The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Balrog brought catastrophic destruction to Moria and forced the Dwarves to flee the once great kingdom, which meant it was no longer possible to mine Mithril.

As a result, the elusive metal became invaluable. In the extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf reveals that the mithril shirt given to Bilbo and then to Frodo was worth more than the value of the Shire.
