What Was Sally McNeil’s Sentence and Killer Is Sally Still in Jail?

November 4, 2022

True crime content and documentary filmmaking in general has been Netflix’s toast among many subscribers for years now. Hardly a week goes by that it doesn’t feel like a new show or movie has been discussed and dissected online, but of course new cases to consider are always welcome, although many titles shed light on lesser-known stories from the past.

This is indeed the case with Killer Sally, a three-episode limited series that debuted on the platform on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

The titular Sally is Sally McNeil, a former American professional bodybuilder who was married to another former bodybuilder named Ray McNeil. However, The Sun reports that McNeil shot and killed her husband on Valentine’s Day in 1995.

With the documentary offering audiences the chance to hear her story through interviews, it’s worth acknowledging Sally McNeil’s pain.

What was Sally McNeil’s sentence?

In 1996, McNeil was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 19 years to life, reports The Cinemaholic.

Although the conviction was overturned, it was actually reinstated in 2004.

Chasing spirits before 1995, the couple first met when they were both Marine Corps officers in 1987, and All That’s Interesting reports that their first meeting at Camp Pendleton near San Diego was prefigured by McNeil’s first marriage to Anthony Lowden. She and Lowden already had a son and a daughter.

After spending time in the Marines, she began doing wrestling bands and pursuing other bodybuilding opportunities.

Cosmopolitan also reports that McNeil alleged that her second husband was abusive in the relationship towards her and her children and that she killed him in self-defense. “I just shot my husband because he beat me up,” she told the 911 operator.

“It is important to present the strong argument”

Killer Sally director Nanette Burstein recently spoke about the case and the series, reports The Guardian.

“You look at a case like this, and you have to wonder about someone’s innocence or guilt, just like the jury had to wonder,” she explained.

“So it’s important to present the strong case that the prosecution is making, but one side was also pointing out how some of the arguments were nonsense, that she couldn’t have been a victim because she was too strong. Which is absurd.

Killer Sally streams exclusively on Netflix.
