In by Rian Johnson blockbuster movies Knives out and its sequel Glass onion: a mystery at loggerheads, there is no character more mysterious than by Daniel Craig Benoit White. In Knives out, he appeared out of nowhere to help investigate the death of Neil Thrombey. In Glass Onion, he surprised tech genius Miles Bron with his looks. Audiences know as much as franchise characters that Blanc is a great detective who shows up wherever he suspects foul play.

But a defining characteristic of Blanc is his extremely strong accent. This helps the character stand out from the rest of the cast and provides a window into Blanc’s origin.

What is Benoît Blanc’s accent?

At a time Knives out and Glass Onion, actor Daniel Craig gives his character Benoit Blanc a very recognizable drawl. The accent will be familiar to many people as a southern accent from southern states in America, such as Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

Blanc’s southern accent has become one of the most recognizable parts of the Knives out frankness, signaling the arrival of the best detective.

Where does Benoit Blanc’s accent come from?

Other than the southern half of America, there has been no specific state where Blanc’s accent comes from. Director Rian Johnson said he wanted Blanc to be as mysterious as possible, meaning he avoided revealing his country of origin.


A desire to leave White a mystery was echoed by Craig. In an interview with Happy Sad ConfusedCraig said the lack of a backstory for Blanc is reminiscent of Detective Hercule Poirot from Agatha Christie’s novels. “Poirot kind of materialized out of nowhere, solved the case, and then disappeared. This puzzle is significant. The center of attention is not on him. He [Blanc] should be a mystery. I’m not interested in knowing what he was doing when he was twelve.

Outside of the film, Daniel Craig opened up about the influences of his accent, quoting a historical figure. Historian Shelby Foote was from the southern state of Mississippi and wrote a three-part history of the Civil War which was published in 1990. Foote died in 2005.

Is Benoit Blanc’s accent on?

Daniel Craig’s normal accent is an English accent. Although he is originally from Chester, he does not have a strong Scouse accent.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Rian Johnson didn’t emphasize in the script, only the words “light Southern drag.” Craig had a lot of freedom with how far he wanted to go with the accent, and he went all the way.

When it came to filming the sequel to Knives out, Craig was worried about doing a poor imitation of the accent. He revealed in an interview with Empire Magazine that he spent four months relearning the accent before filming. Glass Onion.

Does the public like or hate Benoit Blanc’s accent?

Because of Blanc’s thick accent, fans are split on whether they love or hate Craig’s rendition. Some fans found the rendition “artificial, clunky, and unnecessary,” and others wanted it to end. One fan even went so far as to say that Daniel Craig should be banned from Louisiana, a southern state.

But other fans found the accent much nicer. A fan said Glass Onion was excellent, and Craig’s fashion choices and saying shi*balls with a Southern accent were a huge contributing factor to that. Another one said Casting Craig was a brilliant choice because if you take James Bond and give him respect for women and a Southern accent, you end up with White.

One final fan is not just in love with her accent, but the whole character, saying “I really want Benoit Blanc to continue wearing his little outfits and solving his little murders, cinema becomes fun again!!”
