What are the particles in The Upside Down?
The particles seen in Stranger Things’ Upside Downs are known as spores and are constantly being produced.
The Upside Down was created after Eleven made contact with a Demogorgon on November 6, 1983, which caused The Upside Down to form as a replica of the human world, except it was filled with vines, spores and membranes.
Certain growths and monsters in The Upside Down have been found to produce what is known as “spray-spray”, producing ash-like particles.

Are spores dangerous?
Yes, the spores appear to be toxic to humans and act the same way mold spores would be detrimental to our health in the real world.
When Hopper was roaming The Upside Down, the character was sprayed with spores in the face, causing him to collapse and vomit.
Besides the spores adding to the toxicity of The Upside Down as a whole, The Duffer Brothers also revealed that the spores were included in this area to help viewers visibly distinguish The Upside Down from the real world.

The Duffer Brothers wanted The Upside Down to look like a physical organ
ScreenCrush reported that The Duffer Brothers was inspired by a horror movie Extraterrestrial and the video game silent Hill to create the unique look of The Upside Down.
Additionally, Matt Duffer also explained how The Upside Down’s look evolved during the design phase:
“The only thing that’s really changed is the opening in the lab – the rift to the Upside-Down. This portal was a process of exploration that went through variations of aspects and sensations. Many of the early designs seemed “too science fiction”; we wanted it to feel grounded, somewhat gross, like looking inside a body. Unlike a portal to a parallel universe, it felt like a membrane, like a physical organ.
