We recap the Netflix and Crunchyroll Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 4 animated series, “Awakening,” which contains spoilers.

In Episode 3viewers got a closer look at Olmar (voiced by Yu Hayashi) and how things work around his father’s farm. Just when it seemed like things were going badly for Thorfinn (Yuto Uemura) and Einar (Shunsuke Takeuchi)a new character named Snake (voiced by Fuminori Komatsu) was brought into the fold. Although he saved them, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s on Thorfinn’s side either. It will be interesting to see what the introduction of this new character means for our protagonist and how it will affect Thorfinn’s place on the farm as well.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 4 Recap

The episode opens with snakee berating the guards for “bullying the slaves” while Thorfinn’s wounds are bandaged. He apologizes to Thorfinn for the behavior of his men before suddenly rushing towards him.

Why does Snake attack Thorfinn?

Snake attacks Thorfinn, and he dodges, shocking everyone with his combat prowess. Snake tells Thorfinn that by dodging his attack, obviously his body is telling him he wants to live. This seems to surprise Thorfinn, as he cannot understand why he would want to live.

The strong kill the weak

As Pater corrects Thorfinn, Einar complains about the unfairness of the situation. Thorfinn shrugs, saying there’s nothing they can do because “the strongest kill the weakest.” This upsets Einar, but Pater appears to calm him down by apologizing and revealing that Arnheid informed him of what was happening.

Despite being given the day off, Thorfinn and Einar return to work. Einar thinks back to the fight, noting that the way Thorfinn was moving was not normal. He thinks back to what Thorfinn said earlier about the strong killing the weak and becomes curious about Thorfinn’s past.

What does Einar ask of Thorfinn?

Einar asks Thorfinn if he’s ever been to war. When Thorfinn says yes, he asks more detailed questions, like if he’s been killed and how many times. Thorfinn gets irritated at first, knowing what Einar thinks about the war. He then reveals that he doesn’t remember how many people he killed, as he was raised to be a warrior from childhood. Thorfinn asks Einar if knowing that disgusts him, but we don’t see his response.

Why does Einar attack Thorfinn?

That night, Einar lays awake thinking about what Thorfinn said, as well as his own past, when soldiers attacked his village. The more he thinks about it, the angrier he grows until he reaches out to strangle Thorfinn in his sleep.

Thorfinn does not wake up and fight back. Even as Einar pulls his hands away, Thorfinn finds himself stuck in a nightmare of war. Finally, Einar wakes him up, which confuses Thorfinn. Einar grows frustrated again, grabbing Thorfinn and wondering why he wants to die so badly when things could be so much worse for them.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 4 Ending

As Einar turns to walk away from Thorfinn, Thorfinn thanks him for always waking him up from his nightmares. The episode ends with an old canute crossing a cemetery.
