Death lurks around every corner in the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla as the show’s characters face dangers such as vengeful rival warriors, perilous journeys through frozen terrain, and deadly bands of raiders.

Freydis Eiriksdottir faces a particularly tough time in Season 2 of the historical drama as she finds herself on the wrong side of Lord Harekr and Lady Gudrid of the Jomsborg Colony.

But what happens to Freydis in Vikings: Valhalla and does she die at the end of season 2?

Freydis finds himself in danger in Vikings: Valhalla season 2

In the opening episode of the new season, Freydis, Harald and Leif are forced to flee Kattegat as the vengeful Olaf seeks to hunt them down.

As Harald and Leif travel to Novgorod, Freydis sails for Jomsborg, a Viking stronghold on the southern Baltic Sea coast after learning that she has become a revered figure among pagans for her exploits at Uppsala.

Freydis, who is pregnant with Harald’s child, arrives in Jomsborg to a warm welcome as Lord Harekr and Lady Gudrid want to turn the colony into a new Uppsala.

However, as the season progresses, Harekr and Gudrid begin to grow suspicious of Freydis and the pagan refugees supporting her.

Things take a dramatic turn when Freydis and the Jomsviking Jorundr are imprisoned and while she is held captive Freydis eventually gives birth to her son, whom she names Harald.

Harekr has sinister intentions for Freydis, however, as he takes her baby for himself while telling the people of Jomsborg that Freydis has fallen ill after a difficult birth, implying that she does not have long to live.

Does Freydis die in Vikings: Valhalla season 2?

No, Freydis does not die at the end of Vikings: Valhalla season 2.

But the scheming Harekr certainly intends to have her killed.

In an effort to allow Jorundr to show his loyalty to him, Harekr orders the Jomsviking to kill Freydis and trick his pagan followers into thinking she died of natural causes due to childbirth.

However, Jorundr doesn’t go through with the act and warns Freydis that the food he brings him is poisoned and they instead create a plan to fake Freydis’ death in order to get his son back.

But Harekr is wise enough to see through the plan and Jorundr is taken prisoner while Freydis manages to avoid capture, though she falls ill and needs the help of a young girl named Hrefna whom she helped in a previous episode.

For his betrayal, Jorundr has his right hand cut off and exiled from Jomsborg while Freydis, once recovered, challenges Harekr.

He defeats her easily but Freydis’ pagan followers rise up and stone the tyrannical lord to death, thus reuniting Freydis and his son while allowing Jomsvikings and pagans to live peacefully side by side.

What do we know about the real Freydis?

Freydis Eiriksdottir’s only recordings come from two Norse sagas, Erik the Red’s Saga and The Saga of the Greenlanders.

Each of the stories portrays Freyd very differently, with one casting her as a heroine while the other shows her as an evil villain.

In Erik the Red’s Saga, according to World History, she accompanies a group to Vinland (Newfoundland in North America) where she single-handedly defends and rescues her comrades after they are attacked by natives.

Meanwhile, The Saga of the Greenlanders suggests that Freydís was an evil and scheming woman. In the tale, she and her brother Leif accompany two men, Thorvald and Thorfinn, to Vinland.

However, during the expedition, she begins to dislike men and frames them by claiming to Leif that they abused and beat her.

In response, Leif and his followers kill the couple and their party members but refuse to harm the women in the group. Freydís does not dispute this, however, takes an ax and kills the women herself.
