Unsolved Mysteries season 3, episode 3 recap – “Body in Bags”

October 18, 2022

This recap of Unsolved Mysteries Season 3, Episode 3, “Body in Bags,” contains spoilers.

In stark contrast to Unsolved mysteries season 3, episode 2which used expert testimony to add credence to the story of a UFO sighting, “Body in Bags” — a heavy title if any — takes a deeply personal approach to recounting a crime still unresolved and entirely terrestrial.

Unsolved Mysteries Season 3 Episode 3 Recap

This crime is the murder and dismemberment of David Carter, a 39-year-old father, factory worker and clothing entrepreneur, presumably by his girlfriend Tamera Williams, who remains on the run from justice. By all accounts, David was a stand-up guy. He was a hard worker and a devoted father. Everyone seemed to love her – indeed, the motive for her murder was probably that her killer loved her too much.

Almost all of “Body in Bags” is revealed by various members of David’s family, including his father Elton and sister Tasia, as well as his son, DJ. The stories are deeply moving, at least in part because of the brutality and pointlessness of the crime. Suspecting David was about to break up with her, Tamera, whom David met in high school and had been dating for six months, allegedly shot him in the head, cut him into three pieces, then dumped his remains along I-75 in various pieces of luggage purchased specifically for the task. There’s a feeling of extreme bunny-boiler calculation to this that’s almost unbelievable.

Almost as soon as Tamera realized she was a serious suspect, she fled Michigan and has since been seen only on security cameras entering and leaving hotels as far apart as Ann Arbor and New York. We learn this from a US Marshall who is one of the only people outside of David’s immediate family to feature in the episode. Most of the runtime is devoted to establishing who a person David was while explaining how suspicions began to mount around Tamera’s obsessive behavior.

One of the most shocking developments reveals how DJ was likely nearly killed when he nearly fell over his father’s remains, likely before his attacker could put his legs in a sleeping bag, his head in a backpack. back and upper body in a suitcase. A medical examiner later characterizes this patently insane act as likely being a matter of logistics, it’s not particularly easy to smuggle around the body of a 6-foot-4, 190-pound man. Either way, though, it takes a certain type of person to segment a body using nothing but a kitchen knife.

I must admit that I was totally convinced by the depth of feelings in this episode. David’s family seem like lovely people, and obviously he was a great guy too, so it’s easy to imagine himself with a personal stake in the investigation, especially since Tamera remains a fugitive from the justice and that there is currently a cash reward for information on his whereabouts.
