Umbrella Academy’s Mysterious Jennifer Incident Theory Explored

Pressing play The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Episode 1, you no doubt had a number of questions that you were hoping to find answered.

You run through the slices with the utmost enthusiasm, digging deeper down the rabbit hole that is perhaps the wildest season yet. The final ends and some answers have been given. On the other hand, more so, tantalizing questions were asked.

Created by Steve Blackman and adapted from the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way, the American superhero series gave fans plenty to digest when it returns to Netflix on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.

There are many avenues to explore but one, in particular, seems to have encouraged the most discussion and speculation.

Of course, we could only talk about The Umbrella Academy’s Jennifer incident…

Jennifer from the Umbrella Academy incident explored

Ben’s death has been a mystery in the minds of fans everywhere ever since it was touched upon at the start of the series.

The circumstances surrounding his passing remain unknown, but Season 3 drops the most promising clue to unlock the secret yet. Diving into the final season, audiences are treated to a flashback to Ben’s funeral in 2006.

He was 17 and died while embarking on a mission south.

Following the footage, there was speculation that he may have taken his own life. However, the ambiguity surrounding the specifics opens the way to other theories.

The biggest break comes when her passing is dubbed “The Jennifer Incident” by Luther, followed by Viktor finding drawings of a girl named Jennifer covering the walls of Sparrow Ben’s bedroom.

Given this, it’s clear that both versions of Ben had some connection or interest in a girl named Jennifer, though there are different results in the Umbrella and Sparrow timelines to consider.

Theories began to emerge

Screenrant points out that the fact that Sparrow Ben only has pictures of Jennifer and is obviously obsessed with her in some way may signal that she is dead in Sparrow’s timeline.

Drawing parallels between the two timelines, references to the Jennifer incident make it likely that this 2006 mission took place with Jennifer involved on both accounts; the two alternate versions of the mysterious character.

The pictures all over the wall might suggest that she and Ben shared a romantic relationship, or that she was unrequited love. Theorizing it could otherwise be that in the Umbrella timeline, Ben sacrificed his life on the mission to try to save her, while Sparrow Ben was unsuccessful and dwells on the tragedy – hence the infatuation that bleeds into the decor of her room.

Returning to the funeral scene in Season 2, Sir Reginald says “…and have no hesitation in sacrificing himself for another” during the eulogy, which arguably bolsters the theory, leading us to believe that Sparrow Ben was tormented by his decision to save his own skin rather than Jennifer’s.

‘Just tell me how Ben died’

Of course, the reality remains to be seen. But that hasn’t stopped fans from weighing their thoughts on Twitter.
