Trying summary of season 3, episode 4

On their way to meet council worker Noah, the parents repeat facts about their adopted children. Nikki wants Jason to know their birthdays, heights, and the names of their best friends by heart, in case they get tested on that information at the meeting. Jason doesn’t think they’ll go that far, but appeases his partner anyway. Nikki is a bag of nerves at the reunion, awkwardly saying all the wrong things. Jason joins in with his own nervous energy, talking about football and Tyler’s love for a lamp. Noah suggests that they be role models for Tyler and teach him how to make new friends, setting an example. Then Jason’s phone goes off, playing a comedic ringtone. Noah takes notes on this misstep.

As the couple walk home, Nikki’s bags are overflowing with party paraphernalia. They overprepared as usual. Entering their apartment, they hear voices in their house. Jason heads into the living room, armed with a popper, and is greeted by the real estate agent who shows a couple around. Jason is furious and lies to Nikki, hiding the fact that he can’t afford the house. She is still unaware of his lies and does not know that their house is truly for sale. Jason then berates the realtor privately, asking for dibs on their own house. The real estate agent is far from accommodating.

At school, Jason tries to befriend the other parents, but finds them all a bit pretentious. Meanwhile, Nikki meets her sister Karen, who has good news for her. It’s an emotional and delicate conversation, to say the least. Nikki is happy that her sister is pregnant, but secretly devastated. Nikki and Jason struggled to conceive, while Karen never really wanted kids and now has a surprise baby. It’s a nasty irony that cuts Nikki deeply. She is upset, but also wants to be supportive.

Nikki tells Jason the bittersweet news and Jason consoles his partner. He admits that he hates people and that the misanthrope had a hard time making new friends in the schoolyard earlier that day. Things only get worse when Nikki finds out that Tyler only invited adults to her party and they worry that no one will show up for the party tomorrow. Nikki panics and calls all the parents she can.

It’s party day and Nikki went all out, with an elaborate and flashy party. Adam the Lamp sports a party hat and the family patiently awaits arrivals. Tyler looks sad and sulks alone, even before the party begins and the parents are worried that no one will show up. But, in another feel-good moment, the party is suddenly flooded with cheerful children and their parents. The party becomes too much for Tyler, however, who hides with Adam under the table. Scott and Karen arrive, with Scott dressed as an artistic clown. Karen tells Nikki that she still hasn’t told Scott about her pregnancy.

The end

During the party, Karen points out all the mistakes Nikki has made and she feels like she failed as a parent. She hides with Tyler under the table. Karen helps, shifting into full teacher mode, bringing the kids together. Scott makes his unique clown debut, boring the kids to death. Karen saves the day, however, by picking up a handful of cake and stuffing it into Scott’s mouth. The children burst out laughing and the party was once again a success.

Nikki forgives Karen, feeling rather ashamed for not supporting her sister properly from the start. Then, in another heartwarming moment, Karen explains her pregnancy to Scott via the art of mime and they kiss in celebration. This show continues to find inventive and emotive ways to approach very simplistic situations, which I’m all for.

Nikki helps Tyler step out of his comfort zone and he becomes more confident as the day goes on. His adult invitations show up, with the professor and the lollipop man boosting Tyler’s confidence even further. In the final scene, Jason finds himself the confidence to finally talk to one of Tyler’s other parents at school, proving he has as much to learn as the kids.
