This ’90s show has a familiar theme song for a new generation of sitcom fans

January 24, 2023

Every iconic TV show has an even more iconic theme to go along with it. This ’90s show is no different, with a theme song that many fans will recognize.

The revival of the classic American sitcom That 70s Show has moved beyond the era of Eric and his pals.

Instead, the Netflix adaptation is set in the 1990s and follows familiar favorites Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) and their daughter Leia Forman (Callie Haverda).

After a visit to her grandparents’ house in the small Wisconsin town of Point Place, Leia decides to spend her summer there with her new friends, hanging out in Eric’s old basement.

The original That 70s Show theme song

When the show first aired in 1998, the ’70s-based sitcom kicked off with a catchy, sweeping anthem. Big Star’s song In The Street has become forever linked to the classic American television series.

The third track from the band’s debut album #1 Record, In The Street, was released in 1972. Although the song was never changed, the first season played a cover of the song performed by Ben Vaughn and Todd Griffin.

Subsequent seasons opted for a different cover, using Cheap Trick’s That ’70s Song (In The Street).

Each episode of the reboot includes opening credits and a theme song that many will recognize. Brett Anderson’s In The Street plays at the start of each episode, making it the official That 90s Show theme song.

It’s no surprise that Netflix and the show’s creators choose to stick with the original song, as it’s true to the original show. Updating it with a 90s vibe is a subtle way to establish the new era of Forman and the gang.
