This ’90s show captures an iconic era – Forman’s basement has never looked so nostalgic

January 24, 2023

Obviously, a series called That 90s Show is set in the 90s – but what actual year does Netflix’s revival take place?

There’s no doubt that Netflix has spared no expense in creating its latest sitcom. Based on one of America’s funniest TV series, That 70s Show, Netflix returns with a new comedy show.

This ’90s show picks up 20 years after its predecessor, this time focusing on Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), daughter of former protagonist Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and granddaughter of dynamic duo Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp).

Leia soon encounters a group of like-minded misfits to hang out with in Wisconsin, setting off a series of summertime shenanigans. Red is once again subjected to even more teenagers who regularly populate his basement.

Familiar faces return as many characters from the original series pop up from time to time, much to the delight of fans:

What year is That 90s Show taking place?

The first season is set in the summer of 1995. A time before smartphones and the age of social media, That 90s Show brings to life an era that many know and love.

As if the character fashion and dialogue weren’t enough to give the ’90s vibe, the series’ first episode features the Formans discussing The Little Mermaid rental on home video. Nothing screams 90s nostalgia quite like a VCR.

Throughout episodes of That 90s Show, various bits of classic 1990s media are featured. One scene even shows a member of the gang watching the original teen series Beverly Hills, 90210. If that doesn’t set a mid-’90s nostalgic tone, nothing will.

The creators originally said ‘NO’ to Netflix

In an interview with Variety, That 70s Show creator Terry Turner explained how compelling That 90s Show was at first.

Turner claims, along with co-creator Bonnie Turner, that they both said no twice to the streaming giant. After a long debate and the involvement of many back and forths with Netflix, the Turners decided they would only go along with it if the idea was a good one.

Their daughter Lindsey told Variety:

“We agreed among ourselves, we weren’t going to do it unless we found a reason.”

Finally, an idea was decided and a time too. The wait for the highly anticipated reboot of That 70s Show is over, and the Turners have helped produce a whole new generation of troublesome, fun-loving teens.

As the first season takes place during the summer, the future season will also only be set during the summer. This is due to the fact that Leia only visited her grandparents in Wisconsin during the vacation period.

Terry Turner told Variety it was a way to avoid having to represent the children’s schooling.

“Setting it only during the summer eliminates the whole school and having to go to class, which we found out in the original show, that wasn’t where it was interesting. It was more interesting in the basement…”

The Forman’s basement has always been where the action was. It’s central to the original show, and fans of the ’70s-based sitcom will be more than happy to see its return.

This 90s show was released on Netflix on January 19, 2023. All ten episodes of the first season are available upon release.
