Netflix today released the official trailer for its upcoming animated feature The Sea Beast; here’s everything fans need to know.

Today, June 7, marks the second day of Netflix’s extravagant Geeked week-long reveal event, which focuses on the streaming platform’s upcoming original movies.

Although animation won’t be the focus of Geeked Week until Wednesday, Netflix has chosen to share the latest information regarding the highly anticipated animated film, The Sea Beast.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Sea Beast, including the cast, release date, and of course, the new trailer that was announced during today’s Geeked Week livestream.

What is The Sea Beast about?

The Sea Beast is an upcoming family-friendly animated film from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chris Williams, who previously produced Moana, Big Hero Six and Bolt.

The film will tell the story of Jacob Holland, a legendary starship captain and adventurer, and Maisie Brumble, a stowaway on the Dutch flagship. However, the real adventure of these two has already begun, as as soon as they left the safety of the port, they embarked on a journey through an ocean filled with monsters.

“In a time when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, Monster Hunters were famous heroes – and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble sets sail on his legendary ship, he comes face to face with an unexpected ally. Together, they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history…The beast from the sea takes us where the map ends, and the real adventure begins. – Synopsis, via Netflix Media Center.

The official The Sea Beast streaming page also included the following caption: “When a young girl embarks on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, she embarks on an epic journey into uncharted waters – and enters the story.”

Previously, director Williams told Variety that it was “the kind of story I always wanted to do. It’s a story of great adventure where our hero leaves the known world and ventures into uncharted waters. Turns out I do the same thing.

The Sea Beast release date and cast confirmed

As confirmed in the first reveal trailer, The Sea Beast will be released for international streaming via the Netflix platform on Friday, July 8.

The film is one hour and 55 minutes long, making it the perfect Friday night movie for the whole family. The first trailer has been viewed over 3.2 million times on Netflix’s YouTube channel.

In the film, Jacob Holland is the one and only Karl Urban, with Zaris-Angel Hator joining in as the second lead with her role as Maisie Brumble.

Urban is a cult hero among many other geeks around the world, having starred with fantastic performances in The Lord of the Rings (Eomer), the Star Trek reboot (Leonard Bones McCoy), the lead character in Judge Dredd, the Riddick series (Vaako), and of course, the Amazon Prime blockbuster The Boys (Billy Butcher).

Zaris-Angel Hator, meanwhile, is a rising star in Hollywood’s film and streaming TV industry. The young actress made her first appearance in the television series Victoria (2017), before roles in The Midnight Gang (2018), Endeavor (2019) and the recently re-released Morbius (2022). She will also star in the upcoming Amazon TV series The Power, which is currently in post-production.
