The Longest Night season 1, episode 1 recap – the premiere explained

July 8, 2022

This recap of The Longest Night season 1, episode 1 contains spoilers.

As someone who hasn’t buried many bodies, I must admit it’s an amateur’s assessment when I say this, but surely it’s easier to kill the victims before throwing them into a makeshift grave covered in plastic? This seems of little concern to the man we see throwing corpses into the opening of The longest night, whose final victim claws at her shroud as he calmly shovels her until she comes to rest. The other bodies in the pit offer no such complaints.

Blimey is an opening, isn’t it? The man, who we quickly learn is called Simon, takes a bottle of wine on his way home, is polite to the cashier and doesn’t care about the girl with the cut throat who is just sitting in her crib . Soon, armed police arrive and arrest Simon, who surrenders without too much fanfare, all things considered.

The Longest Night Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

But while Simon is relatively calm, his unexpected arrest immediately leads to complications elsewhere. We see a man named Chema hear about it, then drive his car straight over a bridge. The frantic phone calls continue. One, when Simon, aka The Alligator, is suddenly redirected to Baruca Psychiatric Correctional Facility, is placed with prison warden Hugo Roca, who attempts to spend Christmas Eve with his children but has no no choice but to go to work and take two of them, Guille and Alicia, with him, which will no doubt turn out to be a terrible idea. The eldest, Laura, is going to stay with her mother, which seems rather prudent.

No one, especially Hugo, knows why the Alligator was moved to Baruca rather than a maximum security facility. Hugo has assigned a security guard by the name of Macarena Montes, whose job it is to provide backup until Simon can be transferred in the morning. Simon, who somehow knows Hugo’s name, tells him that the night is going to be long.

A big part of this premiere is establishing a few details about Baruca, how it’s part hospital, part prison, as full of doctors as it is guards, and how there are underground maintenance passages connecting various blocks, including the most volatile is Red Block. We meet a few inmates, or patients if you will, both male and female, almost all of whom seem to be conspiring in some way. And we meet some of the staff, including the doctor Hugo sleeps with and an abusive guard who beats up an inmate, Cherokee, we guess isn’t the first time.

And we also have an idea of the overall premise. In snippets, heavily armed and well-equipped men and women are seen arriving outside the prison walls, cutting off electricity and telephone lines. But we also see that Hugo receives a video call from Laura, who has been kidnapped. The gang on the outside want Hugo to deliver Simon, but Laura’s captors will kill her if he does. It’s a very compelling setup, and a few executions help us understand that both sides mean business. The group on the outside will do almost anything to get Simon, and Hugo is determined not to deliver him.

In the final scene of the episode, we see a kidnapped Laura trying to facilitate an escape, causing a pretty serious car accident instead. Without it as leverage, how does the Alligator plan to get by?
