We recap Prime Video Series Hunters Season 2 Episode 1, “Van Glooten’s Day 1972 Butter Sculptor of the Year”, which contains spoilers.

The most hated man in the history of modern civilization must be adolf hitler, the German leader, who sparked World War II and instigated Holocaust genocide, resulting in the deaths of millions of innocent people. A real-life villain who has become something of a caricature in the pop culture narrative lately, is now seen as a stereotypical villain who must be defeated at all costs. This fantasy of killing Hitler is found in Quentin Tarantino Inglourious Basterds, Valkyrie, and many other war movies of the same nature. This is also a major plot point in Prime Video Hunterswhich returns for a second outing after a three-year hiatus.

Hunters Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of Season 2, titled “Van Glooten’s Day 1972 Butter Sculptor of the Year,” opens in Austria, Adolf Hitler’s native nation. It’s a scenic, sunny setting that introduces viewers to Chava Apfelbaumplayed by Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight). She walks into a candy store and a friendly conversation ensues with the store owner. This conversation quickly turns sour when she notices that this is or once was a Jewish-owned store. She frankly asks the owner if he is Jewish. The store owner is offended and somewhat defensive, but explains that he took over from the previous owners, who were Jewish and presumably deported.

Suddenly, Chava pulls out a knife and reveals a tattoo on her arm, indicating that although she seemed hostile towards Jewish people at first and spoke with a German accent, she is actually Jewish herself. She asks about a possible route Hitler might have taken to escape after the war, then proceeds to abduct the store owner’s eyes. These two body parts are crushed on the sculpture of a poor man in the town square as a German version of Kelis’ Milkshake plays in the background. Chava gets a bad-a*s introduction.

The story jumps forward three years to 1975, which we learn about just two years before Meyer’s death. It was revealed in the Season 1 finale that Meyer-Offerman, the Nazi hunter, was actually Wilhelm “The Wolf” Zuchs, a Nazi doctor who tortured many Jews during the war. Upon discovering this information, Jonah killed the traitor.

In this flashback, Meyer (Al Pacino) is stalked by a suspicious individual. He then receives a letter from an unknown sender, which states that someone knows his true identity. The letter says “Hello Wilhelm”, sending Meyer into a paranoid panic. He tries to investigate possible leads, even phoning his real sister Gertrude, but doesn’t seem to find any clues as to who follows him wherever he goes. Meyer decides to confront the stalker in the end and invites the man inside for a drink. He soon realizes that the stalker is a former colleague called Fritzsent by Viktor Frondeheimand he stabs the man to death in an alley.

The Hunters disbanded after the fallout from the Season 1 finale, and Jonah frequents brothels in Paris in 1979. He’s not here for fun, he’s actually stalking his own prey, looking for a specific guest who uses the brothel regularly. Back home, Jonah is engaged to Clara (Emily Rudd) and lives under a new pseudonym. He is now Sam, a student with no family. But he appears to be still deep undercover as a stranger passes him a note in public.

Eventually Jonah finds the man he is looking for. Biff Simpson (Dylan Baker), the undercover Nazi agent is caught in a compromising situation by Jonah, who instantly handcuffs the villain. Jonah states that he waited a year to capture the Nazi and will now kill him. It seems Jonah is still in the Nazi murder business, although the business isn’t booming. Biff tries to negotiate with Jonah, promising to direct him directly to Adolf Hitler, who he believes is still alive. Jonah doesn’t wait to learn about the finer details and simply shoots the Nazi in the face instead.

The ending explained

Meanwhile, in 1979 Pasadena, Millie Morris (Jerrika Hinton), the FBI agent, tracks down his own Nazi. She arrests a bishop, known to have aided the Nazi regime in Lithuania during the war, and killed many himself, including a baby. Unfortunately, there is not enough evidence to lock up the murderer and he is eventually released. Desperate, she calls Jonah, but there is no answer. Millie picks up a leaf from the hunters book and takes matters into her own hands. She shoots the Bishop in his own home and flees the crime scene.

Millie runs back to her apartment, where she begins to get rid of her clothes and all the objects related to the scene of the crime. As she throws away the gun she used to kill the Nazi bishop, she hears a knock on the door. She takes the gun out of the trash can and heads for the door on tiptoe. There is no answer when she continually asks who is there. Upon opening the door however, she is greeted by Jonah. The two haven’t spoken in two years, but he found something important and came to her aid.

In the final scene of the premiere, we see Adolf Hitler shaving in his fanciful dwellings. Udo Kier (Brawl in Cell Block 99) depicts the Führer, even keeping that famous mustache. It gives a scary and precise appearance. He joins The Colonel (Lena Olin) for a meal and then Joe Mizushima (Louis Ozawa) is also at the table. Joe was once their prisoner, but he seems to have settled down with the Nazis for the past few years. What villainous plans do these criminals hatch next?
