Lin (played by Charlie Hunnam) has had his fair share of run-ins with the law while on the run in Bombay, but he has managed to avoid capture so far. In Shantaram season 1, episode 5, he let his guard down slightly and caught the attention of reporter Kavita. She tried to take his picture, and the fugitive snapped. This altercation led Kavita to snoop, and she is now very close to him. In “Dead Man Walking”, Lin continues to forget his place and once again finds himself very close to the authorities.
Shantaram season 1, episode 6 recap
The sixth episode opens with a flashback to Lin’s time in an Australian prison. The police beat him for no reason for days, trying to extract a confession from the criminal. He knows the name of the person who killed an officer, but he won’t let it go. Chief Detective Wally Nightingale takes her to an interrogation room and admits Lin has won. He doesn’t think he will ever get a confession from the criminal. To celebrate Lin’s victory, they share a cold beer together, though one of the inmates sees this happening and quickly spreads a rumor in the prison – Lin is in cahoots with the law. So he must be a snitch. Nightingale wants a name, then he will transfer Lin to another safer prison, or he will be a dead man walking in that particular prison.
Back in the present, Lin and Prabhu hatch a plot to throw Kavita out of the scent. They meet the journalist (again) at Ronaldos – they do get their money’s worth, don’t they? Lin apologizes for overreacting and brings Prabhu in to defuse the situation. The slum dweller begs Kavita, stating that they don’t need the authorities bulldozing and ruining their way of life, they don’t want change. She agrees to drop the article, but they both remark afterwards that it might just be another lie. Unbeknownst to them, Kavita has an associate take a photo of the fugitive in secret.
Lin worries that his days in Bombay are numbered and he begins to properly consider his options for a new passport. He asks Didier for the illegal papers, the price of which is now a pretty big round. At the moment, he is having photos developed and together with Prabhu, they are reigniting their tourist hustle, hoping to earn some quick cash.
Maurizio foolishly starts spending his money, letting everyone know he’s in the money. The pimp has been selling drugs in Khader’s territory for Madame Zhou and Karla soon finds out. Lisa confirms the set up and Karla warns her to stay out. This news could kill them both. The drug dealer Maurizio and Modena are involved with wants to spend the night with Lisa. The hateful and controlling boyfriend Modena isn’t the happiest with the proposal, but doesn’t kick things off either. Lisa demands ten percent of the overall deal in exchange for the heinous act.
Meanwhile, on a lighter note, Prabhu and Parvati finally start interacting with each other. She overhears him telling his aunt that he wants to marry the woman and she strongly implies his desire to marry her too. It’s a rather cute moment in all this debauchery that’s sure to put a smile on your face. They agree that they don’t need anyone’s blessing and arrange a date at the movies.
Lin ends up selling her beloved motorcycle to generate the necessary funds, but a subplot seems likely to upend all her plans. Didier is arrested and beaten by the police, they caught him involved in homosexual acts which is a criminal offense in 80s Bombay. Lin and Vikram collect the bail money and go to the police station local to bring their friend out. This brings Lin dangerously closer to the authorities, who don’t need much of an excuse to throw him in jail just yet.
As they try to get Didier out of jail, Abdullah visits Karla. He tracked down Minister Pandey and discovered he was having an affair. This news will certainly be used to their advantage. Interestingly, the conversation implies that Abdullah and Karla have a story of their own. He mentions Lin’s adoration of her, but she roughly admits that he lifted it. Prabhu and Parvati’s date doesn’t go much better either, as she passes out in the crowded cinema.
Shantaram season 1, end of episode 6
Lin and Vikram pay a lot of money to get Didier out of the station after seeing the bloodied and beaten man. The police negotiate a price for the bribe, but a passing officer notices Lin from before. This particular officer wants to beat Lin on the spot, but instead they agree to a much larger bribe. Lin has now lost all the money he spent the day collecting. It doesn’t look like he’s leaving Bombay after all. Lin takes care of Didier at home and tends to his wounds. Didier agrees to pay for Lin’s passport in exchange for the bailout money.
Prabhu brings his future wife back to the slums, where he hopes Lin can apply his medical know-how to the poor Parvati. As Prabhu asks for Lin’s help, other slum dwellers raise their own concerns. It seems that many people have fallen ill and they all need Lin’s immediate attention, but the slum doctor is nowhere to be found.
