As Mission Majnu debuts on Netflix in January, viewers wonder if it’s based on a true story.
WARNING: Mission Majnu spoilers will be discussed throughout
The Hindi action movie was released on Netflix on January 20, 2023 to mixed to positive reviews.
Set in the 1970s, the film’s action centers on an undercover spy tasked with exposing Pakistan’s developing nuclear weapons program. With a plot rooted in reality – Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program was established in 1972 by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto – you might be curious if the Majnu Mission is based on a true story. We’ll take a look.
Is Mission Majnu based on a true story?
Partially. While the film is inspired by real events, the story follows Amandeep Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) who is a fictional character.
Mission Majnu is set in the years following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It centered on the simmering conflict in East Pakistan, which would become Bangladesh. Bangladesh declared independence, backed by India, in March 1971, but did not claim victory until later that year, in December.
In the early 1970s, agents of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) obtained information on the development of Pakistan’s nuclear program. RAW is India’s foreign intelligence service. The film follows a RAW agent during India’s first successful nuclear test in 1974 as they attempt to gain information on Pakistan’s development program. The most likely operation that mirrors the events of the Majnu mission is Operation Kahuta.

Mission Majnu star says film is ‘inspired by real events’
Bollywood film lead actor Sidharth Malhotra has spoken about the pursuit of historical accuracy in Mission Majnu.
“It’s a film inspired by real events. This is an important mission that RAW has accomplished,” Malhotra said while describing the Netflix movie.
Faced with criticism over the portrayal of the Indo-Pakistani conflict, Malhotra reportedly added, “There is no personal animosity with anyone, these are just documented historical points, of which we will never get complete facts, so for that you have to eventually establish some characters in x time.
This reassurance did not assuage some of the criticism leveled at Mission Majnu about what was included in the film.

There have been actual events that have been left out of Mission Majnu
Although the context of the events surrounding Mission Majnu is real, several details are omitted from the narration.
A key omitted detail, which has never been confirmed, was an alleged rumor that then Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai leaked state secrets from Pakistan’s RAW agency network to Zia- Ul Haq, then the country’s chief martial law administrator. . Desai would have hated the RAW agency. He even cut their funding by 30% in 1977. A central character in both the real-life story and the film adaptation, this detail was seen as a crucial part of Desai’s motivations.
