What is the new Resident Evil about?

Resident Evil (2022) is a new version of the infamous universe created by Capcom during their main series of video games. However, the new show will feature the main storyline of those games as its backstory and base – so you don’t need to be an RE encyclopedia to understand the new TV series, but a little understanding will surely go a long way.

The series is divided into two periods; set in 2022 and 2038 respectively.

In the year 2022, two 14-year-old sisters, Billie and Jade, move into the mysterious planned community of Umbrella Corporation, called New Raccoon City. The two girls are desperate to find out more about their childhood and where they come from, of which they know very little. However, their search for answers only leads to more questions as the curious sisters hear rumors about a retroviral bioweapon called the T virus.

In 2038, the aforementioned T virus reduced humanity to just 15 million refugees. The last remnants of the human race lurk behind the fortified city-states of the “zeros” – once the people who contracted the T-virus disease and became cannibalistic monsters. In this post-apocalyptic world, the Umbrella Corporation remains one of the strongest armies, but instead of hunting monsters, they hunt Jade instead.

The first Resident Evil reviews have arrived

Early reviews for the Resident Evil 2022 series are now starting to be shared online and sadly critics seem to have been slightly disappointed with the latest reimagining of the classic horror franchise.

Polygon says that “For die-hard Resident Evil fans, the series offers interesting explorations of a world that has been altered and abandoned more than once by series publisher Capcom.”

However, they also note in detail how it uses “the world as a loose justification for the weird horrors that lurk around corners, the Netflix series spends most of its time desperately justifying its own existence in the Resident Evil universe” .™and neither builds a new story worth caring about.

IGN gave Resident Evil a 7/10, highlighting how the 2022 storyline is the most engaging and entertaining side of the story and how much more potential a second season has than the first. .

“Despite the imbalance in quality, the acting, special effects, and overall storytelling leave me wanting more and leaving plenty of worthy story threads to explore if they were to be renewed for a second season. .” – Taylor Lyles, via IGN.

The Verge notes how “Experiencing Netflix’s latest series is almost like watching a streamer play one of the franchise’s most forgettable entries – only to realize halfway through that their controller was disconnected the entire time. .”

“In the end, after a good opening episode, resident Evil settles into an action-adventure slog rather than something new or scary. The complete lack of “horror” here is a blatant sin.” – Resident Evil review, via AV Club.
