Netflix’s latest Spanish series is a fast-paced prison thriller with a compelling premise. At six episodes, the series is a tantalizing binge-watch proposition, though it fails to resolve its mysterious narrative at the end, resulting in a frustrating finale with little resolution. However, this will only pique the interest of fans who are invested, and those fans will no doubt investigate the possibility of a follow-up season. Here’s everything we know so far.
Status Renewed or Canceled – Will there be a season 2 of The Longest Night?
Status: To confirm
As of this writing, it’s unclear what the future of this show will be. Netflix is almost certainly waiting for viewership numbers before committing, so in that case it’s worth keeping an eye on sites like Netflix Top 10 to see how the show is doing.
The good news is that the story was clearly designed as a multi-season tale. Virtually nothing has been resolved by the end of the first season, and the story could take many directions if it were to be renewed. I couldn’t say for sure, but if The longest night develops some fan interest, I think it’s likely we’ll see a sequel.
What is the longest night?
A six-part Spanish crime thriller set in a mental correctional facility, the show is primarily about Simon Lago, a notorious serial killer known as The Alligator who finds himself housed in director Hugo Roca’s prison on Christmas Eve. Simon is due to meet a judge the next morning, and there are heavily armed men outside who want to stop him from doing so at all costs. Hugo only has to deliver Simon. However, Simon has had Hugo’s daughter kidnapped and her captors are instructed to kill her if Simon is released. This hook, along with several other dynamic subplots involving prison staff and inmates, provides plenty of drama in the first six episodes.
What do we know about Season 2 so far?
Although we have very little concrete information, it’s easy to make educated guesses about how things are going. Spoilers for the first season below.
For one thing, it looks like Hugo and Lennon are going to work together, although it’s not yet clear what Hugo’s involvement in the whole plot is as he clearly knows Laura’s kidnappers and the mysterious fourth man who continued to receive phone calls throughout the season. It’s definitely a thread that would be pulled over it.
There’s also the matter of the inmates, especially since Manuela found out about Cherokee’s deception when she discovered the prison doctor alive and well. That and Sara’s handshake agreement with Javi remain unanswered, along with the fate of Raquel’s child and what will happen to Bastos.
In other words, there’s a lot of meat on the bones of this show.
