Dog Gone tells an incredible true story
Dog Gone made its way to Netflix on Friday, January 13, 2023.
The film is based on Pauls Toutonghi’s book ‘Dog Gone: A Lost Pet’s Extraordinary Journey and the Family Who Bring Him Home’ which tells the real life story of Fielding (the author’s brother-in-law) and his extensive search for Gonker.
Just like in the movie, the real Gonker got lost while walking along the Appalachian Trail, but what the movie, set in the present day, fails to mention is that the real event took place on October 10, 1998.
His family spent the next two weeks looking for him, according to the New York Post, with Feilding and his father on the trail while his mother stayed home, calling everyone from animal shelters and local newspapers to the stations. police for help in their search. .
Eventually, Gonker was spotted 15 days later, on October 25, at the Wintergreen Resort in Virginia, 111 miles from where he had originally gotten lost.
Where is the real Fielding Marshall now?
Fielding Marshall currently lives in Chile.
In 2005, Virginia-born Fielding moved to South America, living in Brazil and Peru before settling in Chile where he met his wife Soma Maia.
The couple have since had two children, a boy and a girl, and they now run a spiritual retreat together called Mystical Retreats.
The retreat, which is based in Chile, Brazil and Peru, offers a multitude of ways for visitors to relax and unwind, including yoga, meditation, healthy eating and connecting with nature through hikes.
Fielding works as a web designer and developer for the retreat and also organizes kayak tours.
Both Fielding and Soma Maia are active on social media where they post behind-the-scenes photos of their lives, with particularly notable posts showing they attended the premiere of the Netflix movie Dog Gone.
One particularly wholesome image shows the real Fielding standing alongside actor Johnny Berchtold who played him in the film.
What happened to Gonker the dog?
The real Gonker died aged 11 in 2003.
Since the movie Dog Gone is set in the present day, it’s no surprise that some viewers might think that the actual events shown in the movie are more recent than they actually were.
In fact, the real Fielding adopted Gonker in 1992 after breaking up with his girlfriend after their baby girl died during a complex heart operation.
There was then a six-year gap before Gonker went missing on October 10, 1998.
After reuniting with his family, Gonker and Fielding were inseparable for the next five years until they were 11 in 2003.
Dog Gone is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on Friday, January 13, 2023.
