We are discussing the Netflix Noise (2023) movie ending, which will contain spoilers.

Natalia Beristain crime drama, Noise, claims it’s based on “many true stories.” The heartbreaking film follows a desperate mother, Julia (played by Juliette Egurrola), in his quest to film what happened to his daughter, Ger, who had been missing for nine months. Julia teams up with Abril (Therese Ruiz), a young journalist who writes about missing persons cases that Mexican authorities prefer to sweep under the rug. During her clandestine investigation, Julia hires a lawyer who needs armed security because her job is to try to find missing people. She encounters corrupt cops, comes across a truck full of dead bodies the authorities are trying to hide, and meets too many women in her exact situation.

The Noise (2023) ending explained

Julia and Abril’s investigation of Ger’s case seems to have caught the eye of the wrong guy when the reporter is brutally removed from their bus by gunmen. Although the bus is full, no one dares to intervene as Abril begs the other passengers to help her, while Julia is forced to watch helplessly as her new friend is taken away. When she arrives at her destination, the prosecutor in charge of Ger’s disappearance searches for Julia and takes her to a warehouse where the police are holding a cartel member who may have information about her daughter’s fate.

To Julia’s surprise, the cartel member is still a teenager. After showing her some photos of her daughter, Julia finally learns something concrete about her disappearance. According to the boy, the night she disappeared, Ger was in the nightclub taking cocaine she had bought in the pageant. The fact of having bought drugs from the “bad” dealers and being a pretty woman sealed her fate. Although the cartel member does not specify whether the missing girl was sold into human trafficking or killed, he makes it very clear that Julia will never see her again. Shattered by the news, the protagonist exits the building dazed and shocked.

In the streets, a group of women organize a peaceful demonstration demanding that the authorities take action in the cases of missing persons. Julia joins the protests but they are soon dissolved when the riot police arrive. Our protagonist tries to hide with various other protesters in a nearby building, but they are tracked down by the police who burst in and brutally beat them into submission. Clearly the authorities in this scene have no interest in simply shutting down the protest, they are there to teach these women a hard lesson. Unarmed women of all ages are chased, beaten and dragged as they try to escape. Julia is violently punched in the face by an armed officer.

In the final scene, our protagonist follows a hooded figure through the desert, which turns out to be Ger. Learning that Ger survived his ordeal and made it to the protest in time to save his mother would have been nice, but that’s not what’s happening here. Noise is a poignant story and happy endings are not on the menu. Julia was hit hard in the head and passed out before the hooded woman came to pull her away from the violence. She seems to move freely among protesters and police without anyone noticing her. The heartbreaking final moment of this feature film suggests that our protagonist lost his life that day – the only possible way for her and Ger to finally be reunited.
