My Liberation Notes season 1, episode 9 recap – the past is calling us

May 14, 2022

This recap of My Liberation Notes season 1, episode 9 contains spoilers.

My Release Notes pumps the brakes and slows down a bit in its ninth episode, not that it was skyrocketing anyway, but that’s not a bad thing. The focus is on Mr. Gu’s past and the guilt he harbors, while the other characters continue to develop well. The show continues to reveal new layers and carefully develop its drama.

My Liberation Notes season 1, episode 9 recap

Mi-jeong, for example, continues to come out of her shell, while Chang-hee begins to question her hatred for A-reum, wondering if it’s rooted in class resentment – it’s an introspective angle to take, examining our feelings and biases from the inside looking out.

But the focus is on Mr. Gu, who is approached by Sam-sik, who berates a seemingly “remorseless” Gu. He argues with Mi-jeong about an ill-chosen analogy leading to an unfortunate death. But you can see Gu starting to walk away. He tells Mi-jeong to stop worshiping him and starts drinking again. He becomes paranoid.

It’s all handled well, I’d say, and feels like a natural extension of Mr. Gu’s backstory hints that we’ve already been drip-fed. A flashback reveals how Mi-jeong inadvertently spared Gu a beating from thugs, and how that informs Gu’s feelings for her, but the overall feeling is in the past, having caught up a lot here.

I like this angle. My Release Notes took such a patient approach to its drama by allowing us to really get to know these characters, their anxieties, their hopes, and their dreams through several weeks and episodes. Very few shows can do that, because very few shows have enough confidence in their script and cast. This means that things have taken a little longer to get where they are going, but also that we are more invested in his journey than we otherwise would be. It won’t generate the kind of buzzing mainstream attention that some k-dramas are capable of with their instant memory capacity and binge-ready structure, but those looking for careful, contemplative drama shouldn’t be complacent with this one- this .
