May 15, 2022

This recap of My Liberation Notes season 1, episode 11 contains spoilers.

In their focus on Mr. Gu and the idea that our past is catching up with us, the latest episodes of My release notes felt like a big cloud hanging over everyone. If so, then this latest episode is that cloud that’s starting to move away; the first rays of light breaking through the smog. Common struggles begin to bring people together, and those people begin to discover the thing or person in whom they find true comfort. They realize that they don’t have to deal with their problems alone.

My Liberation Notes season 1, episode 11 recap

Consider the power of the Rolls Royce when it comes to Chang-hee. In the last episode, we saw his enthusiasm for it; in this one, we see the strange peace he brings to her. There is an undeniable pleasure in seeing him lead everyone, in seeing a thing means so much to someone.

It’s the same with Gu and Mi-jeong. She sees in him a confidante, someone to unload on, but also a close companion with whom she can share not only her misfortunes and annoyances but also deep aspects of herself. Their first kiss feels like the exclamation mark in a long, winding sentence.

Gu was at the center of last week’s double bill, and he’s certainly not overlooked here, but we’re clearly on the other side of his personal dilemma. The ending of this episode makes it clear that he chooses Mi-jeong over any other obligation he might have. He may be wanted in Seoul, but he’s wanted here, now, and he’s ready to be needed.

And then there’s Gi-jeong and Tae-hun, and Gi-jeong’s boss. There’s a nice angle here in the idea that Gi-jeong isn’t following textbook ideas like “playing hard to get,” but simply sharing her feelings and, ultimately, finding them reciprocated. There’s genuine, heartfelt joy in all of this, and the ripple effect is that even Gi-jeong’s boss benefits. Think about this idea, to play hard to get. It deliberately makes someone anxious, confused and uncomfortable. It shouldn’t be the foundation of a romantic relationship.

By pushing us to consider these ideas and these connections, My release notes truly continues to excel as an understated slice-of-life drama with an abundance of authenticity and intelligence.
