Watch out, we’re crazy (1974)
It might be a bit of an escape, but if you liked the Netflix movie, then a good place to start might be watching the original movie that inspired it. Part of the explosion of Hollywood-inspired 70s European cinema, Watch Out We’re Mad captures the anarchic chaos of its recent remake and garnered a cult following in the years since its release.
Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
With an all-star cast including Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason and Sally Field, Smokey and the Bandit is perhaps the pinnacle of the Buddy-Rogues-in-Cars genre. Smokey and the Bandit inspired a Spin-Off TV series and two sequels. If you love Watch Out, We’re Mad, this will be in your wheelhouse.
Starsky and Hutch (2004)
Echoing a similar vibe by recreating a beloved ’70s property with a new cast and modern feel, 2004’s Starsky and Hutch stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. Directed by Joker director Todd Phillips, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. It screams money and is really only for true fans of the original.
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)
Released the same year as the original Watch Out, We’re Mad, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot share many of the same influences. It’s a buddy movie, it’s got some serious western vibes, and it’s got a lot of car time. It’s certainly a heavier project, but it basically features a young, up-and-coming Jeff Bridges, opposite a peak-era Clint Eastwood. Absolute banger of a movie.
All the Boys in the Way (1972)
Maybe a little shallow, but the original Watch Out, We’re Mad paired Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer, who had quite the on-screen partnership, appearing in a whole slew of movies throughout the ’70s. While keeping their dynamics on screen. If you’re looking for the same, All The Way Boys lands our heroes in the Peruvian jungle where they encounter an emerald speculator.
