This recap of the Netflix anime anthology Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre Season 1 Episode 5, “Intruder” / “Long Hair in the Attic”, contains spoilers.

“Intruder”, taken from the ninth volume of Junji Ito’s Horror World, Hallucinationshas a clever concept that’s horrifying in an understated and imaginative way, and makes a good pairing with “Long Hair in the Attic,” from flesh colored horror, which is another high concept little horror short that feels like it has an underlying theme and wants to be about something.

Junji Ito Maniac Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

“Intruder” explores the concept of duality and alternate dimensions. Oshikiri can hear strange footsteps in the house he lives in alone, and by chance he meets a group of other students who like strange happenings and the paranormal, and he invites them to his house, they quickly theorize that the house hides a portal to another dimension.

While this seems like a good chance for haunted house shenanigans being played out, the episode takes a more interesting twist, introducing an “alternate” version of Oshikiri himself burying corpses in the backyard, suggesting he’s hiding perhaps evidence of his crimes in his own world in this one. In a predictable development, however, the children discover that the bodies he buries are their own and end up helping him cover the corpses to keep the problem out of sight and out of mind.

This is one of the few instances in this collection where I feel like the brevity of the episode is a little detrimental. I would have liked to see more exploration of this concept, but what we get is a nice little short.

“Long Hair in the Attic”, however, is definitely better. Here, Chiemi, a naughty woman with a boyfriend who clearly doesn’t care about her, can hear rats in her roof. She wakes up to find a dead rat in her long black hair, and in an instant the rat appears to have decapitated her.

The strong elements here are the visuals and how Chiemi’s fate loops back to torment her boyfriend, who, after his death, begins to receive crank calls that sound a lot like the sound of his teeth (or the scraping of his teeth). rat claws). ) There’s a striking visual of Chiemi’s dad scared to death after he explored the attic and found Chiemi’s severed head hanging from the rafters by his hair, and that hair takes on a life of its own as it spooks its head out of the house.

The episode ends with Chiemi’s boyfriend being hung up and finally torn to pieces by his hair, as he hears the grinding of teeth and sees long black locks drape all over the apartment.
