This recap of the Netflix anime anthology Junji Ito Maniac Season 1 Episode 4 Recap – “Four x Four Walls” / “The Sandman’s Lair” contains spoilers.

We return to the dual story structure in the fourth episode of Junji Ito Crazyand it’s a decent pairing that still feels like a step back from the obvious majesty of “Suspended balloon”. “Four x Four Walls”, originally known as The Hall of Four Heavy WallsThe Room With Four Walls or The Silent Room, is taken from Junji Ito’s Horror World Volume 6, Souichi’s Curse Diary, while “The Sandman’s Lair”, or Den of the Sleep Demon or Where the Sandman Lives, comes from puppet house and contains deliciously gruesome body horror.

Junji Ito Maniac Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

“Four x Four Walls” is an interestingly constructed episode as it itself revolves around an interesting physical construct. It revolves around Koichi, an older boy whose studies are constantly interrupted by his younger brother Soichi, and a mysterious carpenter who is hired to “soundproof” Koichi’s room and ends up turning into several rooms inside the rooms, which only exacerbates spatial confusion but does not. This actually didn’t deter Soichi from terrorizing his brother.

Some of the tension here, as in the first episode, comes from ambiguity. Koichi is convinced that Soichi is to blame for the noises he hears, Soichi blames a poltergeist, and you’re never quite sure who is telling the truth. The introduction of the carpenter character adds a layer of more explicit otherworldly weirdness, but the bulk of the action revolves around Koichi chasing Soichi through an increasingly labyrinthine idea of the house while trying to bypass sound Alone at homestyle pitfalls.

It should be noted that Soichi is a familiar character in Ito’s stories, a recurring figure known for his plots.

“The Sandman’s Lair” takes the all-too-familiar concept of someone trying to stay awake in fear of what may happen to them while they sleep, and twists it – literally – with a dose of truly nasty body horror. This story is about Yuji, who thinks a dark doppelganger lurks in his dreams, waiting to drag him to the dream world and replace him. He calls on Mari to help him stay awake.

The thing here, however, is the visual representation of what happens when Yuji falls asleep. Mari finds him in the night dragged by his own arm, which disappeared inside his own body, came out of his mouth and pulls him to the ground. His shadow taking over him literally makes him turn around, which is a striking image.

Yuri thinks his backhand shares his desires, so Mari wants him. At the end of the episode, she sticks her arm in Yuri’s as he falls asleep, being pulled inside his body and into the dream world.
