This summary of the The Netflix anime anthology Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre Season 1 Episode 2, “The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel” / “Ice Cream Bus”, contains spoilers.

The second episode of Junji Ito Crazy is the first of two parts of the anthology. “The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel” is the main story of the fourteenth volume of Junji Ito’s Horror Worldwhile “Ice Cream Bus” is the first chapter of the tenth volume of the same series, Puppet House. It’s also one of Ito’s most well-known stories and provides enough gruesome imagery and insight to make up for what was, by all accounts, a relatively moderate first.

Junji Ito Maniac Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

To be fair, on this subject, “The Story of the Mysterious Tunnel” isn’t the most thrilling either. It’s about a child named Goro and his sister Mari who are raised by their father after their mother is lured into the eponymous tunnel, never to be seen again. All sorts of rumors swirl about the tunnel, most of them about ghosts and vanishing people, giving the episode that universally creepy quality of darkness and the unknown.

When the episode opens up further, it is revealed that there is a cosmic ray observatory inside, intended to use the abandoned tunnel to search for strange phenomena, but that is not the cause of the strangeness, just another angle to see it. The scientists there are all tired, the experiments are going wrong and something is definitely going on. Scientists determine that strange, human-looking “somethings” are passing through them, causing their physical well-being to deteriorate.

The stakes are raised here by the disappearance of Mari and Goro’s father. There are some fun ghostly images, and the climax is a frenetic thing, with Mari and the seekers disappearing into the walls and floor of the tunnel, as if eating them alive. However, all of this pales in comparison to the second half of the episode.

“Ice Cream Bus” is downright unpleasant work. The idea is that an ice cream truck driven by a handsome but enigmatic man arrives in a neighborhood, picks up a group of local kids and drives them around, giving them as much free ice cream as they want, which they lick in giant heaps. . No one, including Sonohara, the recently divorced father of a young boy named Tomoki, can figure out why he would do this.

Tomoki resents living with his strict father. When he moans, Sonohara finally allows him to ride the bus, but when he does, he begins to change, refusing to eat his homemade meals. Sonohara demands to get on the bus and is turned away by the driver, though through the window he spots the children voraciously lapping up the giant mound of ice cream.

Eventually, the children begin to lick each other enthusiastically. The climax of the episode sees Sonohara returning home to Tomoki excitedly lapping up his friends, who have all turned into puddles of ice, and when Sonohara tries to drag him away, the young boy transforms himself. in a pile of ice. Nobody’s sweet tooth won’t mind after that.
