The first episode of the netflix anthology Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre adapts a single story from The circus is herethe fifth volume of Junji Ito’s Horror World. It’s a simple tale in many ways, chronicling the exploits of an eccentric Addams Family-style clan: Kazuya, Kinako, Shigorou, Narumi, Hitoshi, and Misako Hikizuri.

Junji Ito Maniac Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The family has a huge inheritance so they don’t have to work, but Kazuya goes out every day and pretends to. While doing so, he meets a spirit photographer whom he invites to photograph the spooky and supposedly haunted mansion. Dysfunction within the family plays for both comedy and quirky near-horror, and Kazuya’s suggestion to hold a seance so the younger siblings can meet their dead parents doesn’t bode well. .

However, most of the hook in this story is whether the family is telling the truth. After the shoot, which the photographer and her boyfriend are invited to attend, one of the siblings is supposedly possessed by the spirit of her deceased father and vomits an ectoplasm which later turns out to be flour. of udon – it was all a trick. Due to the pre-established dysfunction, however, the point of such a thing remains nebulous. There’s a bit of siblings trying to outdo each other, a bit of yelling for attention, and a bit of trying to scare strangers away.

This idea of what is essentially a family drama disguised as light horror is good, but means there are few better things from Ito, which are gripping, terrifying imagery and truly chilling concepts. “The Strange Hikizuri Siblings” has none of those things and despite a last-minute foray into the pure supernatural when the true spirit of Patriarch Hikizuri drives the children out of the house, there’s little to remember here. A standard theme of meddling in things one doesn’t really understand for personal gain probably being a bad idea doesn’t do much to elevate the drama.
