January 11, 2023

When you log on to Netflix, what attracts you the most? For many audiences, it is the platform’s documentary production that takes precedence. Indeed, the streaming service has essentially become synonymous with its prolific non-fiction output, ranging from episodic projects to feature films.

The latest to catch our attention is The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker, which premiered on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

Most will see the title and guess it’s Kai Lawrence, though they might not know him by name but by video. Lawrence became a viral sensation in 2013 after being interviewed by a local news station in California.

He described hitting a man named Jett Simmons McBride in the head with a hatchet after seeing him attack people on the street, ABC30 reports.

However, a different story soon begins to unfold regarding a man named Joseph Galfy…

Who is Joseph Galfy and what happened to him?

News footage in The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker documentary details Joseph Galfy was found dead at the age of 73 in his home on Starlite Drive in Clark, New Jersey. He had lived there for 15 years.

Galfy was a well-known attorney and The Sun reports that he was a partner at Kochanski, Baron & Galfy, based in Rahway, New Jersey. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1970 as a major in the 24th Infantry Division, JAGC. As for his education, he had a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Seton Hall.

The documentary depicts Lawrence meeting Galfy in Times Square and being asked to return to Galfy to stay in the guest room as he was homeless.

However, Lawrence claimed he later killed Galfy in self-defense after alleging the latter tried to assault him, reports The Sun. On the other hand, AP News reports that later medical examiner testimony said Galfy’s injuries were the result of “much more than just an effort to thwart a sexual advance.”

Is Kai Lawrence still in jail?

Yes, National World reports that Lawrence is serving time in New Jersey State Prison in Trenton following a 57-year sentence after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder.

The verdict was delivered in April 2019 after a four-week trial, although the case came to light and an arrest was made just months after Lawrence became a viral star in 2013.

The Sun reports that Lawrence is due for release in October 2061 and will not be eligible for parole until he has served 85% of the 57-year-old’s sentence.

“We are happy that the interests of justice have been served”

Union County District Attorney Michael A Monahan issued a statement following the verdict in the Lawrence case, Netflix Life reports.
