Mari walks over to her son Go. He is fine as his portable game console prevents the arrow from piercing his skin. The old man (the store owner) apologizes for his violence. He tells the group that they can hide in his store if they want. Outside there is a thunderstorm and a lot of rain.

Japan is sinking

Kite makes the group realize that the rain could be dangerous as he saw smoke from the nuclear plant earlier. He then delivers more bad news; they must act as Japan sinks. Go asks the old man if they can use his truck. Suddenly another earthquake hits so they all get in the truck and leave. The old man suggests that they go to Shan City.

Deport

On the radio, the country is preparing ships to help people leave the country and go abroad. As they continue to drive across the country, the group picks up a foreign man named Daniel. As night begins to fall, fireworks can be seen in the distance from Shan Town. When they reach the town, Kite notices that the terrain is not sloped.

Welcome to Shan City

The town is in total darkness and they are greeted by people who show them where the showers are. The group is also served food. Seems like a friendly place and a good community. Haruo Koga states that the food reminds him of his mother’s curry – flashbacks show his mother being crushed in front of him. The food is spiced up with marijuana.

The group is then shown where they sleep. Shan City has its own ecosystem for energy and water. The whole situation is too good to be true. Kite gives the elderly man morphine because he could tell he had withdrawal symptoms. The old man said he had another reason to go to Shan City. The audience is then treated to a ritual by a naked woman doing yoga poses. Someone tells him it’s time to meet the dead. Episode 4 gives the band some brief hope, but you can still tell there’s something lurking around the corner in another brilliant chapter in this cohesive and tragic anime series.
