Is The Sandman on Netflix based on books?
Yes, The Sandman is based on the comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman, who also co-developed the Netflix production alongside David S Goyer and Allan Heinberg.
It was published by DC Comics and the original series ran from January 1889 to March 1996, spanning an impressive 75 issues in total. Among those who brought it to life on the page are artists Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Jill Thompson, Shawn McManus, Marc Hempel, Michael Zulli and Bryan Talbot.
Looking back, it’s generally considered one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.
Indeed, it was one of the first mediums to make The New York Times Bestseller list and is considered incredibly influential in fantasy fiction across the page and screen.
A total of ten trade paperbacks contain the entire series, the first – Preludes and Nocturnes – consisting of issues 1-8 of The Sandman.

What problems does The Sandman adapt to?
With 75 issues, it was impossible for the Netflix series to cover the whole story in a single season.
The first season of The Sandman basically covers the first two books, Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House, which equates to issues 1-16.
Episodes 1-4 are actually named after the first four issues.
Plus, it goes without saying that you don’t need to have read the graphic novels to understand the TV show.

“We try to be extremely faithful to the comics”
Opening up about finally bringing his iconic work to screens, Neil Gaiman sat down with Tudum.
“We reached a point that didn’t really exist when The Sandman comics started,” he explained. “Longer-format romance TV series now have the special effects and budgets to bring this world to life.”
Of course, the advancement of technology has paved the way for new opportunities.
“Technologically, I really think we’re at a point right now where we’re getting to do The Sandman in a way that we couldn’t have dreamed of doing even 15 years ago, even ten years ago.”
Showrunner Allan Heinberg also offered his take: “We try to be extremely faithful to [the] comics, and their minds. Neil is very present. Every script, every prop, every costume, every set, everything catches Neil’s eyes and comments. It’s like living inside the comic as you walk around the sets.
The Sandman is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
