Is The Empress based on a true story?

Yes, The Empress is indeed based on the real events in the life of Elisabeth of Austria.

Elisabeth, or Sisi, was born in Munich in the German region of Bavaria on December 24, 1837, and later grew up to marry Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria when she was just 16 in 1854.

As the drama series explores, Elisabeth found life at the Habsburg court incredibly daunting as she was forced to find a way to cope with her controlling and manipulative stepmother, her ambitious brother-in-law, and the strict expectations that came with her. were imposed on him.

However, as with shows such as The Crown, while The Empress is based on true events, it fictionalises certain elements for dramatic purposes.

Speaking in a press release, The Empress showrunner Katherina Eyssen said: “For me, Elisabeth’s struggle for her individual freedom parallels the struggle of the Austrian people. We do not know to what extent Elizabeth faced the oppression of her people.

“There is no diary of her. But the fact is that a strict neo-absolutism prevailed in Austria, which gave practically no rights to citizens.

“The historical Elizabeth, much like our character, was all about self-determination throughout her life. And at the same time, a whole people was struggling against oppression.

Season 2 Chances Explored [spoilers]

Netflix has yet to renew The Empress for a second season, but there are still plenty of stories to tell if Season 2 is given the green light.

As mentioned, The Empress is based on the story of Elisabeth of Austria and since the final moments of Episode 6, there is still a lot of her life left to explore.

Season 1 ends with Elisabeth discovering that she is expecting a child and venturing into a crowd of protesters and revealing the news in hopes of allaying their fury.

In real life, Elisabeth found out she was pregnant in 1854, the same year she married Emperor Francis.

As she died later in 1898 at the age of 60, there are still 44 years of her life left to explore, giving The Empress plenty of possibilities if Netflix decides to order a second season.
