November 18, 2021

It’s always exciting when a leading actor walks behind the camera …

We’ve seen it several times, with Jonah Hill (mid-90s) and Greta Gerwig (Lady BirdLittle women) do so with great success in recent years.

The latest to expand her skills is the one and only Halle Berry.

Many will recognize the 55-year-old American actress through efforts such as X-Men, John Wick: Chapter 3, Die Another DaySwordfish and Monster’s ballfor which she won the Oscar for Best Actress.

She directs and stars in Bruised, a sports drama written by Michelle Rosenfarb. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2020 and is now screened in a limited number of theaters before arriving on Netflix on Wednesday, November 24, 2021.

The buzz around the film is undeniable, but is Bruised on Netflix based on a true story?

Is Netflix’s Bruised based on a true story?

No, Bruised is not based on a true story, but of course he takes inspiration from the real life of the MMA sport he is exploring.

MMA is a combat sport that allows athletes to hit, grab, and fight on the ground, taking on opponents with techniques common in similar sports like boxing, martial arts, and kickboxing.

The term itself was coined in 1993 and has gained considerable prestige in recent years. Fighters such as Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Anderson silva and beyond are big names who have helped him gain recognition.

Discussing Bruised, Halle Berry portrays Jackie Justice, an elderly mixed martial arts fighter who previously quit the combat sport. However, when approached to fight the best female fighter, she takes up the challenge and goes back into the ring.

Meanwhile, she struggles to raise her 6-year-old son, whom she previously gave up for adoption.

Jackie is not based on an actual MMA fighter and the story is entirely fictional.

Nonetheless, Halle has previously explained that the story is something personal: “I loved it because fighting is something I know so much personally and professionally. I understand what it’s like to fight and not be heard. “

“It was written for a 25 year old Irish Catholic girl”

It might come as no surprise to hear that Bruised means something to Halle personally, given his colossal impact on the storyline.

As Entertainment Weekly noted, she previously revealed that “it was written for a 25-year-old Irish Catholic girl. “

At first, this discouraged her as she felt it was a story she couldn’t make her own. However, this is where Halle’s personal struggle to make the film run began:

“I knew as it was written it couldn’t be me, but what I liked about the story was that it was a classic fight movie. I loved this character’s fractured breakup, and I love seeing a movie about redemption. I want to see the human spirit rise, I want to see someone rise above obstacles and still be standing at the end of the day. “

Forced to get the project off the ground, she convinced the producers to let her re-sculpt the script to tell the redemptive story of a middle-aged black woman. They agreed and she went looking for a manager; in the end, she ended up taking the reins.

While Halle’s artistic cachet is all over the bruises, there are some terrific supporting players for the ride:

There is Adan Canto (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Adriana Lenox (The Blind Side), Sheila Atim (Show), Lela Loren (The Hangover Part III), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Mile 22), Shamier Anderson (Destroyer), and Valentina Shevchenko, a true professional MMA fighter.

Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), and Denny Dillon (Saturday Night Fever), and Danny Boyd Jr. are also on the bill.

Bruised is on Netflix from Wednesday, November 24, 2021.
