Many movies in the war genre tend to glorify conflict, but that’s not something that can be said of the Netflix movie, All Quiet On The Western Front.
Early reviews of the film praised its gritty, hellish realism as it tells the story of a young German soldier who experiences the horrors of the trenches after enlisting in the army.
Naturally, as the film is set against the backdrop of World War I, some wonder if All Quiet On The Western Front is based on a true story.

All Quiet On The Western Front release date and plot preview
All Quiet On The Western Front explodes onto Netflix on Friday, October 28, 2022, after limited release in select theaters.
The film tells the story of Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier who enlists in the army after being inspired by a wave of patriotic fervor at home.
However, Paul’s desire to see action and fight for his country is quickly stifled when he experiences the realities of trench warfare for himself.
With more of his comrades falling with each battle, Paul has no choice but to keep fighting to satisfy the military’s top brass as talks of an armistice fail.
Is All Quiet On The Western Front based on a true story?
Yes and no. While the backdrop of World War I and the efforts to broker peace actually happened, the story of Paul Bäumer himself is a work of fiction.
Indeed, All Quiet On The Western Front is based on the legendary fiction novel of the same name by author Erich Maria Remarque.
Note was himself a veteran of the First World War, so the accounts of terror on the battlefield and its effect on soldiers afterwards come from first-hand experience.
However, Paul Bäumer’s story was created for his novel and is not the story of any particular real person. But given the millions of soldiers who fought and died in World War I, Bäumer’s story is one that can be compared to any number of real people.
One notable change from the books worth mentioning is the inclusion of Daniel Brühl’s character, Matthias Erzberger, who was a real individual tasked with negotiating an end to the war.
This is the third film adaptation of the book.
While Netflix’s effort may be the first German adaptation of All Quiet On The Western Front, two more notable versions have been produced.
The first and most famous is the 1930 effort which starred American actor Lew Ayres as Bäumer and won the third Best Picture Oscar and is considered an all-time classic.
In 1979, a TV movie was released by the American network CBS which starred Richard Thomas of The Waltons as his hapless German soldier and also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Film Editing.
All Quiet On The Western Front will be available to stream on netflix from October 28, 2022, following a limited release in select theaters.
