The series creator was recently interviewed by ScreenRant and took the time to explain why Al’s Mayer is returning in Season 2:

“Al Pacino. Two words, Al Pacino. The dream of working with him is greater than anything, and the gift of power [makes me] feeling so honestly, very lucky. It’s really a pinch moment for me, every day, to work with him. At the end of Season 1, he and I had many conversations. I think we both felt there was unfinished business with this character…”

He continued, “…and we had such a wonderful time collaborating and creatively exploring together that we decided as a tandem to do it again in season two. We cobbled together this origin story for the Hunters through Meyer and to tap into the secrets, depths and dimensions within him, and to allow those secrets of the past to collide with Jonah and his story in 1979 . »
