How did Berlin die in Money Heist?

Andres de Fonollosa, better known by his code name “Berlin,” died in Season 2 of Money Heist after sacrificing himself to let the crew escape – ultimately killed by Suarez and the police.

At the end of Money Heist Season 2, the field team leader had to make a choice: save his crew or try to escape through the tunnel with the police following him.

In the end, Berlin ultimately succeeded (although this in itself is questionable) and sacrificed itself in a hail of bullets to buy time for his fellow robbers to blow the tunnel and escape.

However, Berlin’s fate was already sealed at this point, with a flashback revealing that he suffered from Helmer’s muscular dystrophy, a myofibrillary disease that left him only three years to live.

After being shot at the end of Season 2, we see Berlin appear regularly in the Money Heist series through various flashbacks.

Interestingly, the Money Heist showrunners revealed to El Mundo in 2019 that they regretted killing Berlin – explaining that they would have reconsidered if they had known how popular the series would become.

“If we had known there would be more seasons, we would have thought about killing Berlin. It is because he died a lot. We have killed him too much and there is no way to revive him. – Script coordinator Javier Gómez Santander, via Express.

A Berlin spin-off is in production …

The good news is, we’ll see Berlin return to the Money Heist universe, with a character-driven spinoff series commissioned by Netflix.

The Berlin spinoff series will premiere in 2023 on Netflix, but information regarding the specific plot, staff, or release window has not been shared.

During a fan meeting, Berlin actor Pedro Alonso noted that “It’s a moment to remember because it’s the end of one cycle and the start of another. ”

“I know these people are going to give the show every twist it can get. The responsibility (of running such a popular series) can be a burden and a prison, I hope we continue to have the courage to use this wonderful energy to risk it all again. – Pedro Alonso, via Variety.

The creator talks about cancellations …

While it looks like Money Heist could return season after season, hit show creator Alex Pina has explained why the decision was made to wrap up.

Speaking to Indian Express on a fixed visit, Pina explained how “It’s a very climatic season and I think it’s always best to leave as early as possible. “

“We did over 2,000 minutes of fiction with two heists. I think we’ve exhausted some of the characters’ emotional arcs and their transformation arcs. We’ve talked about it a lot and I think it’s a good time to stop. – Alex Pina, via Indian Express.

Additionally, he added to Oprah Daily in 2020 that there are a plethora of spin-off ideas he’d like to see explored.

“We’ve always looked for characters with very intricate designs and layers. So I think almost all of the characters in Money heist have a duality that we would love to see in a spin-off. We could look at any of them in other contexts. – Alex Pina, via Oprah Daily.
