Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker’s Kai Lawrence is serving 57 years for murder

January 10, 2023

The world’s attention was once fixed on Kai Lawrence, and thanks to the arrival of a new Netflix documentary, it will be again. The platform is often championed for its wide range of diverse non-fiction content, from series projects to feature films. Fortunately, 2023 should be a big year for documentary lovers and Netflix has kicked things off with The Hatch and Wielding Hitchhiker.

The name of the documentary alone may evoke the memory of a viral clip that made the rounds of the web in 2013.

The film dives into the viral video of a hitchhiker named Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, who identified himself as Kai during an interview with a reporter from a local news station in California.

During the interview, he explains that he hit a man – Jett Simmons McBride – in the head with a hatchet after he started attacking people on the street, ABC30 reports.

However, the documentary explores what happened after that viral interview. Where is Kai Lawrence now?

Where is Kai Lawrence now and what happened to him?

Kai Lawrence is serving time in New Jersey State Prison in Trenton after being sentenced to 57 years in prison in April 2019, National World reports.

A jury found him guilty of the first degree murder of 73-year-old Joseph Galfy, whom The Sun reports he met in Times Square. Lawrence was asked to stay in the man’s guest room and, after killing him, claimed he had acted in self-defense.

“It was a brutal, vicious and senseless crime”

Netflix Life reports that Union County District Attorney Michael A Monahan said the following after the verdict was released and Lawrence was sentenced:

“This was a brutal, vicious and senseless crime and we are pleased that the interests of justice have been served. We sincerely thank the jury for their service and hope that today’s verdict brings some comfort to Mr. Galfy’s family, friends and loved ones.

The Sun reports that Lawrence made numerous attempts to overturn the conviction, although these were unsuccessful. An appeal was last rejected in August 2021.

When will Kai Lawrence be released from prison after his conviction?

Lawrence is set for release in October 2061, reports The Sun.

Going forward, he will not be eligible for parole until 85% of his sentence has been served.
