Who is Jett Simmons McBride in The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker?
Jett Simmons McBride is the then 54-year-old man whom Lawrence – real name Caleb Lawrence McGillvary – hit three times in the head with a hatchet shortly before the now-iconic interview that later landed him an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The interview shows Lawrence openly admitting the crime.
The Independent reports that Lawrence was allegedly traveling in the car as a passenger with McBride when he hit someone walking down the street with the vehicle.
Lawrence claimed McBride then grabbed and attacked a woman at the scene, saying he tried to defend her by hitting McBride with a hatchet.
During the press interview, Lawrence described McBride saying that “a guy that big can break a woman’s head like a pencil stick.”

What happened to Jett Simmons McBride and where is he now?
McBride was eventually convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for the incident Lawrence interfered with, and McBride was sentenced to nine years in a mental health facility. Netflix Life reports that he is believed to be a patient at Atascadero State Hospital in California, as there is no information available confirming he has been discharged.
Although the charge was initially attempted murder, he was not convicted on that count, ABC30 reported in 2014.
“We, the jury in the above-headed action, find the defendant Jett Simmons McBride not guilty of Criminal Code Section 664, slash 187 subdivision a, attempted murder as charged in Count 1,” a announced a juror after a trial that lasted a month.
How did Kai Lawrence meet Jett Simmons McBride?
The Globe And Mail reports that McBride surrendered to what he believed to be a terrorist attack the morning he was assaulted; he believed it was going to happen at the Super Bowl.
He allegedly maintained that he was Jesus Christ, which is mentioned in the Netflix documentary. However, that morning his plans were reportedly thwarted by picking up Lawrence, who was hitchhiking.
The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker is now streaming on Netflix.
