Ah, Netflix, you can always rely on the popular streaming platform to deliver some of the best contemporary documentary content. Even in early 2023, Netflix delivered a non-fiction movie that’s bound to be discussed for at least the next two months – The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker.

The documentary premiered on Netflix on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, and will likely make audiences remember one of the most viral moments of 2013.

Do you remember seeing an interview with a man with long hair talking about intervening in an assault while wielding a hatchet?

WATCH: Full interview with Kai Lawrence from 2013

The entire Kai Lawrence interview conducted by journalist Jessob Reisbeck for KMPH, a local news station in California, can be viewed below.

It happened shortly after Lawrence traveled in the vehicle of a man named Jett Simmons McBride, who allegedly hit someone with his car and assaulted a woman, reports The Independent.

Lawrence then hit McBride in the head three times with a hatchet, which he admits in the interview. The documentary explains that other news personalities asked to interview Lawrence at the scene, but he declined.

Since there was only one interview, this no doubt fueled the possibility of this unconventional interview going viral. Jessob explains in the film that he was eager to air the six-minute uncut version of the interview.

Watch it below, but be aware that it contains disturbing content and bad language (beep) throughout:

What happened to Kai Lawrence?

Just months after Kai was celebrated as a hero online, he was arrested for murder, reports Cosmopolitan. Fast forward to April 2019 and National World reports that Lawrence was sentenced to 57 years in prison for the first-degree murder of 73-year-old Joseph Galfy.

In a crime completely isolated from the incident involving McBride, The Sun reports that Lawrence met Galfy in Times Square and was invited to spend the night in his guest room. Newsreel footage in the documentary explains that Galfy was found dead at his home on Starlite Drive in Clark, New Jersey.

The Sun reports that Lawrence says he acted in self-defense in an effort to prevent a sexual assault. However, AP News reports that later medical examiner testimony said Galfy’s injuries were the result of “much more than just an effort to thwart a sexual advance.”

Is Kai Lawrence still in jail?

Yes, Lawrence remains in New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.

He is expected to be released in October 2061, according to The Sun, and will not be eligible for parole until he has served 85% of his sentence.

The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker is now streaming on Netflix.
