The New Taiwanese Horror Movie spell (2022) uses a mockumentary format to explore the story of a woman struggling with the effects of a curse she unleashed years before. In our opinion:
Ronan (Tsai Hsuan-yen) has finally recovered enough from the events of six years ago to take custody of his daughter Dodo (Huang Sin-ting), who lives in a foster home. However, Dodo is soon affected by strange “villains” and falls dangerously ill.
Ronan was once part of a group of YouTube ghost hunters who visited the Mother Buddha-worshipping Chen clan and unleashed a curse on themselves and all who learned of it. Ronan was pregnant at the time, but was unable to care for the baby after delivery due to her fragile mental state, so Dodo was raised in foster care. Six years later, Ronan has her child back, only for their reunion to shatter the peace she had found.
Netflix movie spell (2022) ending explained
As Dodo becomes sicker, Ronan becomes more determined to save her. She contacts a priest and his wife and they perform a dangerous ritual on the girl, but it backfires when Ronan violates the terms of the ritual and feeds Dodo. Meanwhile, Ming, the owner of the foster home Dodo grew up in, researches the curse and retrieves video from the night six years ago in the restored tunnel. Like the priest and his wife, Ming dies horribly in his attempt to help save Dodo.
Ronan brings all of Dodo’s stuff to the foster home and makes a video for her in case she wakes up, asking her to forget about her mother and be happy. Afterwards, she returns to the tunnel, having covered her body in inscriptions, and completes the rituals, including offering Dodo’s ear. She asks the audience to join her in saying the blessing before revealing that she lied and it’s actually a curse. (This is the scariest part of the movie, because the audience feels like they were part of it.)
The more people cursed, the more watered down it becomes, so Ronan hopes that by tricking the public into cursing themselves, she can save Dodo. She explains that even saying the incantation will cause the curse to fall on someone. Looking at Mother Buddha’s face is the heart of the curse, so they keep it covered. In a final attempt to cure Dodo, Ronan lifts the face covering, shows it to the audience, and puts herself into a trance and beats her head until she passes out.
spell ends with a clip of a now happy and healthy Dodo, implying that spreading the curse worked. She will now be able to lead a normal life because she has diluted enough that she is no longer sick.
