echoes summary of season 1, episode 4

“Body” picks up where the third episode left off, with Leni screaming in the dark, searching for her missing daughter. Mattie nonchalantly returns to her mother. She has just said goodbye to Aunt Gina who is going back to the hotel. Charlie then walks over to his wife. These twins seem happy to ruin their partner’s life, but Charlie doesn’t seem to care.

The next morning, a cloud of smoke rises in the distance. Jack and Leni go investigate. The fire originates from a burnt-out car, which contains a burnt body. Floss thinks the corpse is Dylan James and she asks to speak with the couple in private. The sheriff explains that Dylan was slashed with a knife across the abdomen and killed long before the body was set on fire. Floss asks about a new bruise on Jack’s forehead. He lies and says a horse caused it. Gina has disappeared again and Floss also wants to know where she is. It would seem that they are all suspects in the eyes of Floss.

When alone, Jack and Leni have a deeper discussion. This awful excuse for a couple holds so many secrets from each other that it’s a miracle they’re still together. Jack says the bruise is from an altercation with Towers and Payne. These thugs argued with Jack over the stolen foal. Jack owes the ranchers 75,000 plus interest, which he simply cannot afford.

Jack is then arrested. His tire tracks match those found at the crime scene and the police found vials of ketamine from Jack’s office on Dylan’s person. Leni says she will settle it with a lawyer and wants to fight for her immediate release. Again, why is she suddenly fighting in her corner? Leni never seemed so captivated by Jack to begin with. Back at the farm, Leni’s father accuses Leni of being the possible killer, as she also has access to the truck and the ketamine.

Insult to insult, Victor receives a phone call informing him that Gina is in the hospital. Victor and Leni ride with Charlie, but it’s too late, Gina has escaped. The doctor says she was disoriented and bleeding. Charlie and Leni search the area, but Leni ends the hunt early and catches up with her own imprisoned partner instead. Jack demands the whole truth and Lexi lies saying she just wanted to be free. Jack admits they’re broke and the crooked ranchers Towers and Payne want to pay. Leni replies that she will fix everything.

Gina calls, informing her sister that Towers and Payne are after her, she needs Leni’s help right away. Leni agrees to meet her at Dylan’s grandmother’s house. When Leni arrives, Georgia explains that the thugs chased Gina moments ago. This stilted sequence of events really has no tension. An event following one after the other without stake.

The end

Leni encounters the thugs at Tower’s premises. She passes them the check for 60k. They seem to ignore the story of Jack’s fight and attempt to intimidate Leni, insinuating another kidnapping. She defends herself and manages to escape. However, Gina has now chosen not to answer her phone and Leni speeds through the city, unsure of her next move.

The police pull her over and Leni is then arrested, not for speeding but for Dylan’s murder. Back at the station, Floss lays out all the evidence she needs to see. There are photographs of Leni’s transaction with Towers and Payne. Floss says that’s evidence of influencing witnesses. Then she takes the knife and the broken handle out of her car. Gina helped them find Leni and it seems she also framed her sister for murder after all.
