Based on true events, the film follows young Fielding Marshall whose story begins shortly after a rocky breakup with his college girlfriend. To help him through the emotional time, Fielding adopts a dog from the local shelter whom he promptly names Gonker.

When Fielding and Gonker return to his family, his parents take a while to warm up to the dog, but eventually they begin to bond.

Does Gonker the dog die in Dog Gone?

No, luckily Gonker the dog doesn’t die at the end of Dog Gone.

However, there are several instances throughout the film where Fielding and the Marshall family become concerned for the poor dog, the first of which occurs during an emergency trip to the vet where they are told Gonker is 50/ 50 chance of surviving the night. .

The vet reveals that Gonker has a rare condition called Addison’s disease, also known as adrenal insufficiency, where the body does not produce enough of certain chemicals called glucocorticoids.

To treat the disease, Gonker must receive an injection every 30 days to ensure he remains healthy. It turns out to be pretty straightforward until the adventurous pooch gets lost on the Appalachian Trail, the world’s longest hiking trail, with just 20 days until he needs his next life-saving injection.

The search pushes the family to their limits, while giving Fielding and his dad much-needed time to bond.

Finally, Fielding and the Marshalls are reunited with Gonker – but there’s one final twist before the film ends.

Fielding secretly hid his own medical issues throughout Dog Gone as he didn’t eat or sleep properly and also coughed up blood.

After finally saving Gonker, his health problems catch up with him and he collapses before being rushed to hospital.

We learn that he has ulcerative colitis (ulcers and inflammation of the intestinal system) which requires the removal of a significant portion of his large intestine.

Luckily, however, the doctors manage to save Fielding and the film ends with his parents ushering Gonker into his hospital room.
